Marisa’s qualifications in specific subjects below.
Algebra 1
Solving for variables, factoring, graphing, inequalities, sets of real numbers, square roots... These are just a few topics that are covered in Algebra 1. I can assist in any of these topics and more!
Algebra 2
Algebra 2 is a lot of graphing and further discovery of how equations and their graphs relate. I can help your student get a better conceptual understanding of how to predict what graphs will look based on the equation, without relying on a calculator. Solving for variables, using logarithmic and exponential equations, understanding shifts and other graphical behavior are all things that I can help with!
Calculus
I have many years of experience teaching calculus. I took the AP calculus exam myself as a senior in high school and have annually volunteered at Calculus Camp every April since then. Whether you're trying to crack the AP exam, or just pass a college level calculus course, I can help you attain your goal!
Cooking
I grew up in a family that revolved around the kitchen. Our favorite meals were the ones we made at home together... And they still are! Maybe you want your student to learn a thing or two about feeding him/herself before leaving for college. Or maybe you want to learn about creating baked goods and delicious meals from scratch. I can help with all of that. I also specialize in cooking with organic local ingredients. I have great recipes for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and sugar-free diets. I also have experience in cooking for gourmet fine dining. Whatever your taste or style is, I can help you make it edible. Come to my kitchen and we'll cook something up!
Fitness
I am an AFAA certified group fitness instructor and I teach classes at the local gyms, including cycling, muscle conditioning, total body conditioning, high intensity interval training, and barre classes. If you are interested in learning more about fitness, thinking about getting certified as a fitness instructor, or simply want to create more body awareness, please send me a message today and we will get started!
Geometry
Geometry is a facet of math unique from all the other algebra-based forms. It is common for a student who excels in algebra to struggle with geometry, and for a student who struggled in algebra to excel in geometry. Geometry introduces a writing and logic component to mathematics, where students must write logical proofs, preparing them for more formal mathematical theorems in their future studies.
Precalculus
PreCalculus is a culmination of everything algebra, leading up to the the introduction of the almighty Calculus. Students often have a hard time jumping from topic to topic in preparation for all the algebraic demands of calculus study. Having taught this class in the classroom myself, I understand the curricular demands, the content of the class, and how the concepts will build into a calculus class in the future.
Probability
To me, probability is one of the most fascinating topics in mathematics. Probability can make you sound smart, and it can also make you rich. Actuaries use probability to assess risk for insurance companies (and make a lot of money doing it), and professional gamblers use probability in their everyday dealings. If probability is a subject you are struggling with, then you "probab"ly need to contact me for an appointment.
Trigonometry
Trigonometry is one of my favorite studies in mathematics. Not only does it have a large range of applications, but it is a beautiful pairing of geometry with algebra. Please allow me to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of trigonometry with you or your student.
