After more than 20 years in the insurance industry I returned to college to realize my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. In the last eight years I have taught 4th grade and 5th grade all subjects and seventh grade reading and writing. While teaching seventh grade my classes have included both honors programs and special education inclusion classes. Due to the nature of the population in the schools where I have taught, classes have included a large percentage of students for whom English is their second language. I currently hold a valid Arizona k-8 teaching certificate with a middle school language arts endorsement and a k-12 ESL endorsement.In part due to training and partly due to inclination my teaching style includes hands-on and creative activities as well as traditional teaching methods. For me, the best part of teaching is coaching individual students to progress.

Writing

Writing at all levels including writing process, drafting, revising and editing. Focus is on Ideas, organization, clarity,voice, word choice, sentence fluency and mechanics. Research papers focus on all of the above plus style (APA or MLA). Writing is an important form for communicating ideas and all writing ultimately focuses on clarity of communication.

Elementary (K-6th)

Currently hold an Arizona K-8 teaching certificate including an ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsement and a Middle School Language Arts Endorsement. My course work also includes methods classes for all K-8 subject areas in addition to course work in creative activities and Children's Literature. While my most recent teaching experience (6 years) has been at the middle school level, for two years I taught 4th and 5th grade all subjects.

Study Skills

As a certified K-8 teacher with a K-12 ESL endorsement I have a great deal of experience is helping students learn how to learn using study support including graphic organizers, flash cards, outlines, reading strategies such as survey, question, clarify, predict, confirm, reflect. Since a great deal of academic learning is based on retaining information that is either read or heard using reading strategies as well as graphic organizers can substantially improve a students level of success.

ESL/ESOL

Currently I hold an Arizona Teaching Certificate with an ESL endorsement. For the last eight years I have taught in schools where the population was more than 40% students for whom English is a second language. Due to the make-up of the population, all my lessons were adapted to effectively meet the needs of these students.
