I have graduated from Prescott College with Master of Arts degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Permaculture and Ecological Design in May 2012. I am excited to get involved with the young minds of today.

I came to Prescott College as a part of the highly selective Graduate Teaching Assistantship Program (GTA) in the fall of 2010. As a GTA, I was challenged with creating a math and science tutoring program for our on-campus undergraduates. My background as a nationally certified tutor and academic adviser made this challenge doable. This demonstrates my ability to manage a project and all its responsibilities independently. Afterwards, I was given more responsibility and asked to teach a Biology class for a week. Then, I was asked to co-teach a biology class for the spring semester of 2011. All of these experiences establish my ability to excel in roles such as teaching.

During the spring of 2011, I enrolled in a certificate program through ECOSA, a regenerative ecological design school, where I gained hands-on experience by designing with actual clients. My first client was the city of Prescott; the second client was a non-profit organization based in California. The city of Prescott project was to redevelop the historic rodeo grounds. The non-profit project goal was to design an off-grid community/school for disabled children in West Africa. These client engagements were completed in a team environment. While attending ECOSA (forty hours a week for sixteen weeks), I was enrolled full time in my Master's program and co-taught an undergraduate Biology course. I believe this testifies to my faculty for successfully managing a heavy work load while maintaining excellent performances in each area.
In addition to teaching, I am a Sustainability Research Assistant and part of a team whose responsibility is to aid in the creation of the Climate Action Plan for Prescott College. I am also currently writing and completing my thesis on developing a design process in the context of ecological and regenerative design philosophies that can be applied to a variety of projects, climates, locations, and communities. This experience is providing me the opportunity to further develop my design skills and learn how to explain design to people that might be unfamiliar with the field. Top consultants have a technical specialty as well as the ability to build solid relationships with their clients and have the communication skills to translate technical jargon into understandable and actionable language. During my final semester of school, I was hired by the Graduate Admissions Office to reach out and build relationships with highly qualified Master’s program applicants. As the final obstacle I have graduated from my undergraduate and graduate degree without taking out a loan. I offer help in aiding college students in how to find money, with the help of my book that I am close to publishing.
In closing, I feel that my interdisciplinary background and newly acquired ecological design skills will allow me to make a significant contribution to students. Thank you for the opportunity to teach and tutor.

Respectfully yours,

Matthew E.
