I am currently a k-6th grade general music teacher and love to share my passion for music with students every day! However, I have really missed getting the opportunity to have one-on-one time with students in the private setting and am actively seeking students for flute, piano and composition lessons. I taught private students throughout my undergraduate and graduate years and was able to develop a teaching style over the years that showcases the unique individuality of each student. I want to bring out the needs, goals, musical preferences and personality of each of my students! It is my job to not only teach my student the craft of his instrument, but to ignite in him or her a real excitement for music and I strive to do that by getting to know my students for the unique musician that they are. In addition to this, I work with my students and parents alike to put goals in place that can be met by tracking progress over time. Please contact me with any other questions you may have. I hope to take part in your/your student's musical journey!
I have a minor in Biblical Studies from my undergraduate school, The Master's College. In addition to taking two theology courses, four survey courses of the entire bible, and other various elective bible courses, I have also been a student of biblical studies in my own time for many years.
I have two degrees in Composition and have studied under some of the nation's best regarded composers. I have composed for various instruments, chamber groups, choir and orchestra. I have enjoyed performances of my pieces locally and abroad.
I took four years of ear training as part of my undergraduate degree. I currently teach ear training to all of my general music students as well as my private students. I primarily teach ear training through solfege; as students begin to understand relationships between different intervals, they can apply it to music they hear and read.
I began studying the flute when I was twelve, and it became my primary instrument as I continued to study through college. I have also been teaching flute privately since 2007 and have taught flute classes in school and adjudicated for the flute section during a high school band festival hosted by my graduate school, Butler University.
In addition to holding two degrees in music, I am also qualified to tutor general music in that I am currently a general music teacher. I have taught two years of general music and have taught grades K-6th. I have done a lot of self study on the Kodaly methodology which gives me a very strong foundation for teaching children music in a developmentally appropriate sequence.
I have a Bachelor's and Master's in music, and both degrees required extensive study in music history. My undergraduate courses were surveys from Ancient Greece to present. My graduate studies included a course in the history of Romantic music. I also studied the history of electronic music and 20th C. music in greater depth during my graduate years.
I have studied piano since I was 7 years old and still continue to practice today. I have taught around 50 students of varying ages and abilities in private piano and have experience preparing my students for recitals.
I took four years of sight singing in college, but had developed my sight singing skills even before then when I learned the solfege system in high school. I now teach solfege to my general music students in order for them to gain musical literacy. Sight Singing is simply the ability to hear the music that you see, and all of my students are working toward developing that skill. This is also a skill I'd like to incorporate into instrumental lessons.
