Arizona State University West (English)
A recent graduate from ASU with a BA in English, I earned a GPA of a 3.92 and graduated with honors. Teaching as a Course Assistant in one of my classes, I facilitated a class discussion and lectured on literary works relevant to American literature. I LOVE English, teaching, and learning! When I teach, I have two main objectives: to have fun and to inform. I encourage student-participation through interactive activities including notecards, self-made puzzles, matching, and fun sayings/ acronyms. I teach students rather than subjects and will modify my lessons to meet the their needs. My favorite part of teaching is watching students learn and grow. When they are challenged and motivated, they do so many amazing things! Student questions are always welcome. English is such a relevant subject when applied through thought-provoking questions and analyses! I thrive on grammar, punctuation, and editing. I love grammar so much, I have helped my sister as well as peers in the editing of their papers. Most of my teaching experience comes through an 18-month Study Abroad I did in Switzerland in which I taught students ranging in age from 7-55. I have also taught in church since 2008 and tutored in high school. A recent graduate from ASU with a BA in English, I earned a GPA of a 3.92 and graduated with honors. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Working as a Communication Assessment Learning Lab (C.A.L.L.) Mentor in college, I helped students to improve their communication skills through constructive feedback. When one girl forgot where she was, I recommended color-coordinating her speech. I used to be so afraid of public speaking that my hands became sweaty while my words were a jumbled mess but have since learned to cope with the anxiety. Controlling my anxiety, I have spoken before groups of people ranging from 20-200 people.
As a third grader,I cherished my teacher's advice to " paint a picture with words" and wrote my first 18-page story. An admirer of words,I have continued throughout my academic career as a reporter and editor in high school as well as through my own writing interests of a memoir, a western, and poetry. In April 2014,I won the poetry contest and had my works published in the Canyon Voices, a literary magazine produced by ASU West. For me, writing provides so many creative and artistic possibilities.
