My life's work has been to teach students with special needs so that they can meet their greatest potential. I have taught Special Education students of all age in four states for a total of 40 years, and approach my work with compassion and the belief that all students are learners. I hold an MA in Special Education from the University of New Mexico, and am certified to teach Special Education students in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.
I teach my students multi-sensory strategies to improve their skills in reading, and writing. I am trained to teach Lindamood-Bell and the Wilson Reading System of phonemic awareness and have also been a trainer of other teachers. I can support IEP goals or simply help struggling learners with reading fluency and comprehension. I will work with any grade level or age.
As a current full-time Elementary Special Education Teacher I am available to tutor students in the late afternoon and on Saturdays.
I am a certified Special Education in three states who has worked with ADD/ADHD students for forty years. In the IEPs I write for these students I recommend modifications and accommodations to help them succeed in general education classrooms, and model teaching strategies. I also work closely with parents to help manage their ADD students at home.
I have been teaching students with dyslexia for forty years, and truly know and understand disabilities. I subscribe to the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading and am trained in the Wilson System and Lindamood Bell. I have also been a trainer of general education teachers, Speech Therapists and other Special Education teachers in multisensory reading strategies.
I have taught elementary aged students in all subject areas to include study skills, reading, writing and math. My expertise ranges from teaching students in the general education classes by scaffolding their tasks with supports that help them meet the requirements of general curriculum to targeted remedial instruction in all areas. Reading is the key to all other subjects and I have dedicated many years to refining my skills as a reading teacher.
The teaching of phonics is essential to the success of dyslexic students. Phonics within the structure of a multi-sensory approach which takes into account phonemic awareness and the basic six syllable rules is foundational. Fluency and comprehension then follow. I am a teacher who understands not only phonics, but also how it relates to the bigger picture of achieving literacy and ultimately fluency and comprehension.
It is important that a teacher of Special Needs students understands disabilities and how they affect the process of learning in different ways. My experiences have given me the opportunity to use what I know about disabilities to focus on the individual to develop the proper prescription for success. I have worked with students with ADHD, autism, developmental delays, and behavior disorders with the outcome that they learn and thrive.
