My name is Jeffrey. I have a plethora of teaching and tutoring experiences, including three years of overseas teaching of English as a Second Language- I taught for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade Language Arts, Science and Spelling skills classes at a Bilingual School in Comayagua, Honduras. Following this experience, I worked as an ESL teacher for 7th-9th grades at a Preparatory Academy in Pyeongcheon, South Korea. Most recently, I taught 9th-12 grade ESL at a High School in Jeollanamdo province, a rural area roughly four hours southwest of Seoul, South Korea. I have also worked as a Middle School teacher in South Phoenix. Most recently, I have taught Middle School Language Arts, Literature and Grammar classes in North Phoenix, Arizona. I feel that the diverse nature of my experiences as an English teacher in Phoenix and as an ESL teacher in South Korea have enabled me to anticipate potential difficulties and design lessons and activities which enable students to overcome difficulties which may arise during the course of a lesson.
In my opinion, The most effective method of instruction is to implement the "I do, we do, you do" model. This approach is pretty self explanatory, affording the students to understand how a concept is "supposed" to work, the opportunity to explore that same concept on their own with some assistance from the tutor, and finally explore the concept on their own with minimal guidance. I also attempt to apply real-world circumstances to a given concept with the ultimate goal of helping students to obtain the intrinsic, rather than extrinsic, motivation, that they need to be successful.
