I tutor math because I enjoy seeing the light come on when a student "gets it" for the first time. I understand that algebra and many other concepts can be very confusing and I remember as a student myself wondering, "When am I ever going to use this?" After working in a local school district for 3 years, primarily as an assistant in junior and high school math classrooms, I discovered a gift I have. It lies in communicating the concepts of algebra and various other math ideas to students in a manner that they can comprehend. Many times I have been asked by my students, "Why doesn't my teacher explain it this way?", referring to how we just went over a particular problem from a text book. My style of tutoring is to work through actual problems in a one-on-one setting, explain how we get the answer, and then have the student explain the concept back to me so I know that they have the concept down, and not just the answer to the problem. Most of my students come to me for help out of frustration, but after some work, get to a point of better understanding, and once in a while, even become a fan of math. If I can turn "I hate math" into "I guess it's not so bad," then I consider that a success. If my style seems like a fit for you or your student, then I would love to help. I'm also very flexible with meeting times and locations. Thanks!
