My name is Carlos. I did my formal school in the US but spent quite a bit of time with my family in Venezuela. Although my first language is Spanish, I really learned both language simultaneously and am completely literate in both. I've been teaching in public schools for about 16 years, mainly with 2nd language learners. I have experience in K-12 grade teaching all subjects but my areas of focus have been English and Spanish Literacy. I have mainly worked with Middle and High School levels so I'm comfortable with all levels of both languages.
I believe in teaching Spanish the same way we learned our first language, by using it. We can focus on any of the areas of literacy simultaneously or focus on certain ones more than others. I also encourage students to use their language outside of the classroom/tutoring sessions. I take students to Central America to practice Spanish, learn about culture, do volunteer work, and participate in ecotourism. Closer to home, I take students on local outdoors trips to learn about Arizona's amazing landscape, all the while practicing Spanish. In the most simple form, we visit anywhere the learner is interested in, we simply do it all in Spanish. We can jump on the light rail and cruise around town as we practice or we can study college literature or conjugate verbs!
