I'm a composer, theorist, and pianist with a Doctorate in music from the University of Northern Colorado. Originally from Long Island, I am now based in Phoenix. I love people, and I love teaching music theory. Theory is important because it helps you understand musical meaning and discourse. It also makes your mind razor sharp, which is handy no matter what you do, whether play an instrument, study engineering, or design software.
As a tutor, I engage my students by explaining concepts clearly, and allowing them to grasp ideas before moving on. My tutoring sessions require focus and concentration, but are tailored to the needs of each student. Students will learn what they need to excel in this discipline, whether it's identifying intervals and key signatures, proofreading scores for part-writing errors, or analyzing complex harmony. As a teacher, I know how to make complicated ideas seem simple. The light-bulb moments make my sessions exciting!
Music theory, ear training, counterpoint, and composition overlap with each other. I have expertise in all of these, as well as music history and piano. I look forward to sharing my passion for music with those who want to deepen their understanding and excel in their studies.
