I have been tutoring for many years. Each of my students improved at least one grade. Instructors in classes would ask me to help those who were having difficulty, which led me to begin tutoring while in college. Teaching is my first love, and I continue to teach the little ones in our family as part of every-day life.
Because of my studies of French, Spanish and English, I have had a lot of grammar, and I have kept my old grammar book detailing methods not used today, such as diagramming. I rely on tools that have served for generations as the basis for instruction. I do not divert instruction away from the book/subject matter, but do use materials to enhance what the student is learning in the text book.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask, as one cannot explain everything you might need for your student in this space.
I look forward to hearing from you.
With all sincerity,
Other than daily studying the Bible, I've read supporting books that document the information found in the Old & New Testament. The Bible is an area of interest for me, so I daily read it (I'm reading it end to end for the third time), and I've taken a course of Religious Studies at San Jose State University and two semesters of the Old and New Testament at Pepperdine, which is required by all students. It is a private, religious university in California. I have a kids' wall with hand prints and some of the scripture I grew up memorizing surrounding the prints. I give a dollar to the children in my family when they've memorized a scripture, and we discuss their application to real life situations. I once had a weekly Bible study for the kids in the neighborhood, which was fun.
After I received my Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations and Business Administration, I began to take on clients of my own. In my initial meeting, I would ask, "What is your goal for your business at this point, and how fast did you want to get there?" We would look at the budget, whether there was a business plan and begin at that point. I developed a promotional plan that supported the strategies and objectives. We reviewed competition, distribution channels, products, the three types of customers, did a SWOT analysis and implemented the plan. I assisted an author, a Sushi restaurant with a very successful Southern California reach into various media (TV, radio, print), my own new agribusiness garnered press in various locations in the country in print and television, and I was a key speaker at the National Rhea Association in San Antonio, Texas, lecturing on Marketing 101 to growers. I began my business with $15,000 start-up funds and at the end of the first year had earned back $12,000 in sales. I've kept my own financials on QuickBooks for my personal businesses successfully.
I enjoy helping others with the challenges that come with running a business.
Understanding the wonder of the world that opens up to a person once he learns to read is something many people bypass. I emphasize it with children because reading is the basis for any successful future. Children have such creativity, inspiration and energy that I try to tap into all of this in the course of the tutoring.
The basics of grammar can begin at an early age with great results.
I invite you to consider me as a tutor for your young student.
I was a French/Spanish major for my first Associates of Arts degree, and throughout my education, I have always been drawn to foreign students. I would go to soccer games with them and spend time with their families. When I was 20, I traveled to Europe for 5 weeks on my own. I stayed part of the time with a French family. It was at that time that I was as foreign people are here - not able to communicate in a land with different customs. I have a sense of estrangement that newcomers feel when they come here. So, when I tutor English, I approach it from their standpoint with my background in grammar, spelling, journalism writing (which is what they read in our newspapers), etc. I feel I can offer comprehensive instruction because of this.
I welcome you to contact me to find out more.
Grammar is the structure of a sentence where each word has a function. We know this naturally, but there are guidelines and rules that help us communicate better then when we do not use them. Diagramming is an old technique that helps people as well.
Grammar is something that I love to discuss, learn about and teach.
If you feel I might be able to enlighten you about our language, please consider me as your tutor.
After graduating from Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA, with a Bachelor's in Public Relations and Business Administration, I began to take on clients. I met Jack Gordon, former manager/husband of LaToya Jackson. He had experience with national and international campaigns, and I had experience with local, regional campaigns plus the education to support my efforts. We worked well together as a team.
Before attending Pepperdine and meeting Jack Gordon, my work involved volunteering. I breathed new life into Ventura County Aviation Association's internal organ called, VCAA News, by establishing bulking parties. There were so many members participating that I had more people than I could accommodate in my home. For the Experimental Aviation Association, Chapter 723, Camarillo, CA, I took on the role of Public Relations Director. It was my campaign that allowed them to earn enough through their air show for them to build a hangar. The next year, they used my campaign again and built a second hangar.
While with Jack Gordon, I created Sushi Week in August where - for the first time outside of Japan - Sushi Mac, Sherman Oaks, CA, had a sushi eating contest. It earned regional television, local radio and foreign language television coverage. Sushi Mac had another contest the following year.
I put $15,000 into my own new agribusiness, and by the end of the first year, I had earned $12,000 back in sales. One campaign I and a rancher worked on earned press from various locations in the USA. All the ranchers were a part of it, and it was exciting to watch it unfold.
Jack and I had many clients: singers, actors, directors and comedians and some were even controversial.
I can guide someone through the hoops of promotion by examining the business, product and its life cycle, the three types of clients, doing a SWOT analysis and examining the strategies and supporting tactics. In lectures, we would always point to the Pet Rock example. Reality/value is in the perception of the customer.
I have used a variety of QuickBook versions. For five years in New York City I used the manufacturing version for the company. The company's CPA insisted we use it and taught me how. For my own side businesses, I have used 2007, 2008, 2009 QuickBooks. I taught my co-worker how to use QB Manufacturing, and when I arrived in Phoenix in 2008, I taught two women the basics when I was attending Training To You, Phoenix, to take the five Microsoft Office exams from Microsoft. I continue to learn more about the QuickBooks programs, as there is a lot to them.
Many instructors teach a traditional method, which is fine. I do also, but I add the importance of the function of each word. Diagramming is a tool not used today, but it was used when I learned. I kept my grammar book that shows how to diagram. It also is a fun tool to use.
I like to teach a game to younger students that leads them to proper use of words - the parts of speech. I enjoyed it in the 4th grade, though I was fine in using the traditional method of learning.
Phonetics is something I use as opposed to memorization, also.
These are just some of the tools I use when teaching English grammar, punctuation, comprehension and composition.
Please always feel free to ask me any questions. It is important that you are comfortable with me.
My first Associate Degree was in French and Spanish. I have kept up with the languages and attended San Jose State University majoring in Spanish. While there, my associates were from South American countries. We went to soccer games together, I played the conga drums in a Latin band and was close to a Peruvian family. I learned some words in various dialects. People have always been of great interest to me, and my choice of courses reflect it.
In my personal life at the moment, I am an aunt to four and am teaching them at every occasion. I love teaching, and I love children.
Instructors no longer use diagraming to assist in explaining the function of words in a sentence. This is an important tool when coupled with intent, grammatical structure and punctuation when the student is laboring over how to express meaning. I have kept my grammar books that show how this is done.
I am a published author, and compiled a Communications thesis at Pepperdine University that was among other examples of writing for future students. My instructor had me present my thesis at a Communications Symposeum as well.
I have taken many grammar courses in foreign languages, which reinforce English grammar, and I interned for the Press Courier and had five beats before the paper closed.
I hope these qualifications give you a sense of my capabilities in English and writing.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
