Hello, I am what they call "a transplanted native" since I have lived here in the Phoenix metropolitan area since August, 1976. I graduated from a private Christian high school in Massachusetts, where we lived at the time. Several years later, I earned my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Bob Jones University, and mainly taught students in private schools in Kentucky, St. Paul, MN and here, including tutoring two second graders in math. More recently, during the time that I worked for a local tutoring agency and tutored students from kindergarten through eighth grade in reading and elementary math, I also completed four reading courses from two community colleges and added a Reading Specialist and SEI (Structured English Immersion) endorsements to my Provisional Elementary Teacher Certificate. I enjoy helping children and adults learn and succeed in their areas of academic need.

RACHEL’s subjects

Elementary (K-6th)

In 2009 I took and passed the AEPA Professional Knowledge test for elementary school teachers, and in 2010 I took and passed the AEPA Subject Knowledge test, which tested me in all subject areas for grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Elementary Math

After finishing my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, I accepted a 5th/6th grade teaching job in a private school. In addition, I tutored two second-grade students in math. More recently, I helped a 3rd and 4th grade boy in reading and math, and the last two years I worked for a local tutoring company, tutoring students in Kindergarten through 6th grade in reading and math.

Although I am not really familiar with a lot of literary genre, I am very good with grammar, spelling, writing, and proofreading.

I enjoy all the different aspects of the English language and mathematics, and have had a few years of experience in tutoring children, adolescents, and young adults in areas such as reading and comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar, as well as components of mathematics.

Literature, I learned years ago, is divided into two main categories: fiction (which includes prose, novels, and short stories, that tell about imaginary characters and events) and nonfiction (which deals with real situations, persons, or events; for example, essays and biographies).

In the Spring semester of 2011, I completed two reading courses at Mesa Community College and two online courses from Rio Salado College. The main emphasis in most, if not all of them, was dealing with phonics as the best approach in teaching.
Whenever I have taught a child learning to read or beginning reading, I have used the rules of phonics, which is a big help to them.

I never took a course in proofreading, but I've learned through the years to go back over things that I've written, look for errors, and then make corrections in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

In the spring of 2011, I took four required reading courses at Mesa Community College and online from Rio Salado, and successfully earned my Reading Specialist endorsement for my Provisional Elementary Teacher Certificate. For my internship, I tutored an ESL student in first grade, and learned later, that with her teacher's and my help, she is now doing much better in school.

As a child growing up, I was always an excellent speller. Whenever we had a Spelling Bee, I was one of the last ones still standing. Looking back, I believe the reason for it was because I was taught to spell phonetically. In the Spring semester of 2011, we learned to teach the various aspects of reading using phonics and phonetics, which, of course, included spelling.

I have learned through the years as a student myself, and later as a teacher, that learning vocabulary is very important. It can sharpen the mind and build the person's confidence when reading, writing, or holding a conversation.

Although I have never submitted any written material to a publisher, I enjoy writing, such as keeping a diary or a journal, or writing a poem, or words for a song.

Writing is an integral part of the broader subject, reading, as I was reminded of, when I earned the Reading Specialist endorsement, recently.
