About Maurice

I have taught small groups and individuals for over 20 years, both in school settings and in students' homes or at neutral locations like coffee shops and bookstores. The first three questions I ask myself are "How does this person learn best? What is his or her learning style? How can I help this person learn more effectively?"

I have a Master's degree in Special Education from the Johns Hopkins University (in Baltimore, MD), and a current teaching certificate from the State of Arizona, which qualifies me to teach in both elementary schools and high schools. I also have special qualifications on my teaching certificate to teach math and reading.

I am a highly skilled tutor for students ranging from special education children in public elementary school to middle and high school students in private schools like BASIS and Tesseract, all the way up to college students in ASU. In fact, I have recently worked with a 4th grade student who improved so much that he lost his special education status. One of my high school students is now close to a solid B-student in 10th grade, after having failed his entire freshman year. And one of my ASU students came back to me for help in four different math courses and earned the grades he wanted in all of them.

I have a deep understanding of how most students can excel in reading (both decoding and comprehension), math (from elementary math all the way up to calculus and statistics) and writing, including both basic writing and advanced composition. I have also helped students master social studies and sciences by teaching them effective study skills and techniques that enable them to learn and retain the information efficiently and effectively.

With this flexibility, I go beyond the initial reason for your tutoring request to help you with those other academic challenges that come up that wouldn't necessarily have been important enough for you to hire a tutor.

Over the years I have been asked many times "What do you teach?" My answer has always been "Students." I don't see myself as teaching a specific subject, but rather I consider myself responsible for my student's entire academic progress. I am not satisfied that I have done my job until my student is able to succeed in all of his or her studies completely independently, using the study skills, memorization techniques, and test-taking abilities that I have helped them develop.

I am willing to be flexible with the timing of sessions, adding "emergency" time for those important tests or assignments, providing my schedule allows it. I do prefer at least 6 hours notice of cancellations, and will still charge for a late cancellation unless there are particularly extenuating circumstances.

I am always excited to meet new students and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The English part of the ACT assesses your use of punctuation, correct word forms, and logical and effective seq
uences of sentences. There are very simple and logical rules governing these choices. I can help you see why it has to be this way so that you get a feel for what is correct and what is not.

I am certified in AZ as a reading specialist, qualified to teach reading and comprehension even to people who find this particularly challenging.

ACT Math

The math part of the ACT is mostly made up of word problems, which are the part of math which was most challenging for a lot of students in school. This is largely because schools tend to do a poor job of teaching word problems. With some concentrated attention on a variety of word problems without the clues that are generally accidentally given by schoolteachers, you will find that these stories become much easier to solve.

When helping people with word problems, I use my expertise as a certified reading specialist along with my math teaching credential to help you to rapid mastery.

ACT Reading

The reading part of the ACT presents you with passages that would typically fit on two pages of a paperback book. It then asks you questions about the main idea, inferences from the text, vocabulary in context, and specific details. I have a wealth of materials that will quickly help you develop these skills to improve your scores on the ACT.

As a certified reading specialist in AZ, I am well-equipped to pinpoint the exact skills which are challenging for you and help you achieve mastery.

ACT Science

The science section of the ACT primarily presents you with some graphs or charts along with a written explanation of how the data was obtained. It then asks you to read information from the graphs and make inferences and judgments about them. While you are not expected to be fully familiar with all the scientific concepts in these stories, you do need to be comfortable reading graphs and understanding what they mean.

I have many innovative and effective strategies that will help you improve your comprehension of all kinds of graphs. Please let me use my AZ math teaching credential to help you with your ACT.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked in special education for over 15 years, including 5 years running a special education resource room program. Many of the students I have helped have had ADD or ADHD, and I have a wealth of ideas and techniques to help such students succeed, even in the anti-ADHD environment they find in school classrooms.

Algebra 1

Algebra I is the basis for all higher math. This is where the concepts begin to get really abstract and it is very important to be able to find ways to visualize what is happening. If one can create a picture of what is happening in one’s mind, one can then remember the concepts and apply them to the situations which will be used in geometry and onwards. One of the ways I help students with this is by having them use what I call a ‘trivial example’, which is an example of the rule which is so easy that I can’t get it wrong! This can help a student check the correct method even in a high-stress exam. There has to be a better way of learning than trying to remember lists of formulas… and I can almost always find it.
One of my high school students used to be really scared of math… and he earned an F. This year, he is passing, and he just asked me for some extra problems so that he could practice a concept to be sure he had it clear for his next test. I don’t have to remind him of material from earlier in the year anymore, because he remembers it himself.
I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is the course where math becomes really abstract, where we start considering ideas like logarithms and imaginary numbers. Historically, some of these concepts met strong resistance from many creative and thoughtful mathematicians because they are very difficult to relate to the real world. I have clear and comprehensible ways of explaining these concepts so that they become easy to retain and apply to real-world problems. I have practical and useful strategies that will help you remember how to solve problems even in high-stress testing situations.
I am a certified AZ teacher with a math endorsement for high-school math.

Aspergers

In my 15 years working in special education, and the 5 years I ran a special education resource room program, I have encountered a variety of children with Aspergers syndrome. They are not all the same, and each one needs to be addressed according to his or her specific learning style and view of the world.

ASVAB

Besides having taught reading, writing, math, and science for over 15 years, I have also worked in a fine carpentry shop for 2 years, taken a 1-year automobile maintenance course, and rewired numerous appliances over the years. I am familiar with all the material covered in the ASVAB test and can give you practical and effective tips on how to remember the information when you sit down for the test.

I am an AZ certified teacher in both Elementary and High school. I personalize my teaching in response to your best learning style and life experience.

Calculus

I took advanced calculus in high school and have regularly reviewed the material to develop more accessible ways of explaining this highly technical and very abstract subject.

Chemistry

I am a certified teacher in the State of AZ with much experience teaching all the sciences in tutoring situations. I will focus on finding your individual learning style so that I can help you master the material in the most effective way for you.

DOS

When I bought my first PC back in 1990, the first thing I did was read through the entire DOS manual. There are still many tasks which can be accomplished quicker and more easily using the DOS prompt than by working in Windows tools.

Dyslexia

I have an Arizona teaching certificate as a special educator with a reading endorsement which recognizes my special skill in teaching reading. I spent 4 years teaching dyslexic students in a resource room setting in a private school in New York before establishing a new resource room program in a private school in Indianapolis. I led and taught that program for 5 years, successfully teaching many students with a wide variety of dyslexic symptoms. Since then I have continued to research new methods and have a range of teaching tools from which I select the ones most appropriate for your individual needs.

Economics

I have over 20 years experience teaching many different subjects and I passed a two year course in Economics. I am passionately interested in the subject and enjoy showing people the fascinating side of the dismal science.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught the core elementary subjects for over 15 years, both in the classroom and in tutoring situations. I have a Master's degree in Special Education from the Johns Hopkins University (in Baltimore, MD) and a current teaching certificate from the State of AZ which allows me to teach all subjects in both elementary schools and high schools, with special mentions of math and reading.

I am highly skilled at pinpointing the exact skills which challenge each student and will tailor my instruction for those particular skills and for the student's individual learning style.

I make sure that my students recognize the progress they are making so that they become excited to learn more. And I help them understand their own strengths and preferences so that they can learn more effectively in the future.

Besides the core subjects, I am also able to help my students in the sciences and social studies. When asked what I teach, I always answer, "Students," because I consider the whole student my responsibility. I don't think my job is done until my student is able to succeed in all his or her academic studies completely independently.

Elementary Math

When students are beginning their math career it is essential that they quickly become comfortable with the basic concepts so they don’t have the opportunity to develop fear of math. To this end, I have developed many effective techniques to help them understand numbers in an easy non-threatening way.
I show them the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in ways that make sense to them, and give them fun activities to practice their skills. One of the prime failures of math teaching is that children don’t become expert with their math facts such as the dreaded times tables. I have a method of teaching times tables that quickly improves students’ mastery without the drudgery of endless oral repetition and flashcards.
When students become confused by graphs, I have easy methods using color coding and other tools that help them swiftly improve their proficiency.
I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.

Elementary Science

In my own education I was privileged to attend schools with well-equipped science labs so I had the opportunity to perform or observe regular experiments from which I have a very clear understanding of science. I also have the experience of a 2-year concentrated science course.
When I teach, I always focus on my student's individual learning style and seek the best examples and strategies to help him or her to excel.

English

I have tutored many students in all aspects of English, from reading and comprehension to grammar and writing. My focus is always on helping the student improve his or her skills and integrate all aspects of the study of English so that reading supports writing and vice versa.

ESL/ESOL

I spent two years teaching newly arrived immigrant students from the former Soviet Union. When they arrived, they did not know a word of English. After one year of regular subject instruction conducted in steadily improving English, they were able to transition to mainstream classrooms.

Finance

During a break from teaching I worked in the financial industry for over five years before deciding that my passion is really teaching rather than selling. I can support my explanations of financial concepts with real-life examples that bring the ideas to life and provide images that aid memorization.

GED

Although the GED gives you an opportunity to demonstrate that you have learned the basic high school curriculum, it focuses strongly on reading comprehension in all sections of the test. The math, science, and social studies parts all have texts or word problems with questions that depend on understanding the story.
As a certified AZ elementary high school teacher with endorsements in both reading and math, and extensive background in social studies and the sciences, I can help you master the skills and material necessary to earn your GED.

General Computer

I have been using computers for writing, drawing, keeping my ideas and information organized, and doing math for over 20 years.
I have successfully used combinations of software programs to teach both adults and children to edit their writing and create both pleasing and impressive compositions.

Geometry

Geometry is the basis for all higher math. I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.

Grammar

The ability to express oneself clearly and impressively is highly dependent on one's knowledge of grammar. Reading comprehension also relies on an understanding of the author's use of grammar.
I have a wide variety of different techniques to improve people's understanding of grammar, whether they are in elementary school or already adult.
As a qualified reading specialist in AZ, I fully understand the importance of grammar to our learning, and the difficulty it presents to many students.

Hebrew

I spent over 10 years in intensive study of Hebrew literature and am thoroughly expert in Hebrew grammar and style. I am completely fluent in Hebrew reading and writing. I have also taught many students the basics of Hebrew reading and comprehension and can help you build the skill of understanding the language as you read or hear it, without having to think the translation as you go.

Literature

Literature is the best tool for improving our enjoyment and appreciation of the English language. But it can also be a very difficult subject to study. I am an accomplished student of literature, with a variety of unique study strategies gathered from my years studying literature in languages other than English.
As an AZ qualified reading specialist, I can help you unlock the great world of enjoyment that comes with a confident ability to read great literature.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel for many years, both as a study aid to take notes in technical subjects and as a financial tool to track various aspects of my business endeavors. I have constructed many complex formulas and habitually use Excel's charts and graphs to help me understand my data more clearly.
If you are looking for hands-on help to use Excel for your own purposes, I am happy to share my experience.

Microsoft Windows

It seems that Microsoft keep moving things around in Windows just to keep anyone from becoming a real expert in how to keep it working! I have been poking Windows "under the hood" ever since Windows 3.1 first came out, and I have continued with every version of Windows since.

I can help you understand what can be done in Windows, and how to find the best way to do it in whichever version you are fortunate to have on your computer.

Microsoft Word

As a sophisticated user of Microsoft Word, with over 15 years' teaching experience, I can help you find those hidden features of Word. Do you need to create a particular format, insert something in a document, convert your files for or from another program? I've done them all... and I can show you how.

Phonics

As an experienced special educator with a long history of teaching the decoding part of reading, I am thoroughly versed in the phonics system of the English language. I am always happy and excited to teach phonics.

Physical Science

Having passed a 2-year course in physical science, I am completely familiar with all the topics included in this subject. One of the main difficulties people have with physical science is visualizing the concepts and seeing how they work in the real world. I have a particular ability to relate the more abstract ideas to things we know in our everyday lives, to give my students and image to think of when they see a difficult problem. I tailor my teaching and my examples to the learning style and life experience of my students to give them the maximum chance to remember what they learn.
I am an AZ certified teacher with over 15 years experience in the sciences.

Physics

Physics is the branch of science that is closest to math. It is the most conceptual, in which students have to rely less on memory and more on comprehension. With the use of appropriate and effective visualizations of the more abstract concepts, I boost my students’ memory of the ideas and formulas that they need to solve problems. I provide simple and effective tools to improve recall of difficult equations even in stressful testing situations.
I am an AZ certified teacher with over 15 years experience in the sciences.

Prealgebra

As students progress in math from the basics into preparation for algebra, they need to begin thinking of numbers in more abstract ways. They need to understand different kinds of fractions and negative numbers, which we don’t see around us in our everyday world. They need to think of addition and multiplication in new and more advanced ways.
I show my students how these concepts relate to the world they know and how they can easily understand them. One of my students was recently hopelessly confused by integers, and after one tutoring session, she understood them and was suddenly getting over 90% of her homework correct. (And we spent half of that tutoring session on reading!)
I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.

Precalculus

I have taught math at all levels up to calculus and am strongly aware of the interconnections between the different skills that are involved in math. I have a particular ability to analyze my students' performance to determine the particular skill deficits that are the crux of their difficulties. By focusing on the concepts that challenge each individual student I am able to significantly improve his or her performance and confidence in a short time. I also aim to teach my students the habit of understanding math and becoming comfortable and confident mathematicians.

Probability

The study of probability began as a way to help people win at gambling, but it has become much more than that. It underlies the science of statistics which affects all aspects of our daily lives, from medical treatments to politics, from education to travel, and much more. Knowing the history and uses of probability enables me to explain the concepts in everyday terms that make sense to ordinary people.

Reading

I have taught reading for over 10 years. I have focused both on decoding and on comprehension and I have a wealth of material and techniques to help students at almost all levels of proficiency. I really enjoy overcoming peoples difficulties in reading and opening up the great universe of written works for their enjoyment and benefit.

SAT Math

Almost every math question on the SAT has a quick, easy way to solve it... if you can find it. Sometimes it is as simple as noticing a hidden multiplication fact, or an algebra rule, or a trigonometric ratio. I can show you what to look for and how to find the correct responses fast enough to finish the test in the time.

As an AZ certified high school math teacher, I can help you develop strategies to boost your score on the SAT. I am also qualified as a reading specialist, so I can help with the reading and writing portions as well.

Special Needs

Having worked in special education for over 15 years, and having run a special education resource room program for 5 years, I am well acquainted with all the various ways that students can learn or function differently than the so-called "normal" population.
I have an Arizona Special Education Certificate (Cross Categorical) and can help you make the most of your abilities.

Spelling

When I was running a Special Education Resource Room program in a private school, I was privileged to meet one of the foremost experts in spelling instruction in the United States. She clearly explained the principles that she has found effective in helping people improve their spelling.
Ever since then, I have used what she taught me both in spelling instruction and in reading instruction, where it has resulted in students making gains beyond their teachers' expectations.

Statistics

I am a certified math teacher in AZ with expert knowledge of statistics including the topics in the AP statistics course. I also have a special understanding of the challenges that statistics present to many students. I don't just explain the concepts, I also give my students specific practical tools to help them bring the concepts into the test with them, no matter how stressful the testing situation is.

Study Skills

As a special educator running my own special education resource room in a private school, I helped many students develop efficient study skills. I can help students learn how to study for tests, structure activities to perform both short-term and long-term tasks, and to take tests.

Trigonometry

I am a certified teacher in AZ with a specific addition to my certificate allowing me to teach high school math. When I am tutoring in trigonometry, I focus on demonstrating why the ratios work the way they do and give my students practical ways to remind themselves of the rules even in the most stressful of testing situations. My goal is to make trigonometry so easy that my students remember it for life.

Writing

Writing involves many skills, brainstorming ideas, outlining a sequence of ideas in a logical progression, planning paragraphs, writing well-formed sentences, using interesting vocabulary, and physically putting the words on the paper. I have helped students attain proficiency in all those skills.
