Algebra 1

I have worked in education for over 20 years, mostly in special education, and have taught many children to master algebra. I have a particular ability to help people for whom "algebra just doesn't make sense!"

Algebra 2

I have taught math at all levels to many "math-challenged" students over the last 20 years. I specialize in making math "friendly" for every student. Math is an abstract subject, but I make it easier by using examples and explanations from the student's own life experience.

General Computer

I have been using computers for writing, drawing, keeping my ideas and information organized, and doing math for over 20 years.
I have successfully used combinations of software programs to teach both adults and children to edit their writing and create both pleasing and impressive compositions.

Geometry

I have taught Geometry for many years and have a particular ability to help students understand it clearly.

Prealgebra

I have a deep understanding of math up to and including algebra and have helped many students transform their math performance. I strongly believe that it is not enough to explain a math concept, but one has to help the student find ways of carrying the concept around in their head so that it is always available and instantly accessible.

Reading

I have taught reading for over 10 years. I have focused both on decoding and on comprehension and I have a wealth of material and techniques to help students at almost all levels of proficiency. I really enjoy overcoming peoples difficulties in reading and opening up the great universe of written works for their enjoyment and benefit.

Writing

Writing involves many skills, brainstorming ideas, outlining a sequence of ideas in a logical progression, planning paragraphs, writing well-formed sentences, using interesting vocabulary, and physically putting the words on the paper. I have helped students attain proficiency in all those skills.

English

I have tutored many students in all aspects of English, from reading and comprehension to grammar and writing. My focus is always on helping the student improve his or her skills and integrate all aspects of the study of English so that reading supports writing and vice versa.

Economics

I have over 20 years experience teaching many different subjects and I passed a two year course in Economics. I am passionately interested in the subject and enjoy showing people the fascinating side of the dismal science.

Spelling

When I was running a Special Education Resource Room program in a private school, I was privileged to meet one of the foremost experts in spelling instruction in the United States. She clearly explained the principles that she has found effective in helping people improve their spelling.
Ever since then, I have used what she taught me both in spelling instruction and in reading instruction, where it has resulted in students making gains beyond their teachers' expectations.

ACT Math

I have taught math at all levels of elementary and high school for more than 10 years, and have a particular ability to make the math problems 'real'. I have a strong passion for helping people to use math in everyday life. The ACT test is focused on your ability to use practical math.

Elementary Math

I have over 15 years experience tutoring math to students with varying degrees of difficulty with numbers and calculations. My students have gained success in Math, but more importantly, they have become much more confident in their abilities and have come to see themselves as competent mathematicians.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have both supported students in kindergarten through sixth grade in classroom subjects as a special educator and also substituted in many classrooms in these grades. I am becoming known as a substitute who is actually eager to teach! Whatever the subject, I am happy to explain it in ways that use the student's existing knowledge as a basis for new understanding.

Phonics

As an experienced special educator with a long history of teaching the decoding part of reading, I am thoroughly versed in the phonics system of the English language. I am always happy and excited to teach phonics.

Study Skills

As a special educator running my own special education resource room in a private school, I helped many students develop efficient study skills. I can help students learn how to study for tests, structure activities to perform both short-term and long-term tasks, and to take tests.

Special Needs

Having worked in special education for over 15 years, and having run a special education resource room program for 5 years, I am well acquainted with all the various ways that students can learn or function differently than the so-called "normal" population.
I have an Arizona Special Education Certificate (Cross Categorical) and can help you make the most of your abilities.

Hebrew

I spent over 10 years in intensive study of Hebrew literature and am thoroughly expert in Hebrew grammar and style. I am completely fluent in Hebrew reading and writing.

ESL/ESOL

I spent two years teaching newly arrived immigrant students from the former Soviet Union. When they arrived, they did not know a word of English. After one year of regular subject instruction conducted in steadily improving English, they were able to transition to mainstream classrooms.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked in special education for over 15 years, including 5 years running a special education resource room program. Many of the students I have helped have had ADD or ADHD, and I have a wealth of ideas and techniques to help such students succeed, even in the anti-ADHD environment they find in school classrooms.

Aspergers

In my 15 years working in special education, and the 5 years I ran a special education resource room program, I have encountered a variety of children with Aspergers syndrome. They are not all the same, and each one needs to be addressed according to his or her specific learning style and view of the world.

DOS

When I bought my first PC back in 1990, the first thing I did was read through the entire DOS manual. There are still many tasks which can be accomplished quicker and more easily using the DOS prompt than by working in Windows tools.

Dyslexia

I spent 4 years teaching dyslexic students in a resource room setting in a private school in New York before establishing a new resource room program in a private school in Indianapolis. I led and taught that program for 5 years, successfully teaching many students with a wide variety of dyslexic symptoms.

Microsoft Windows

It seems that Microsoft keep moving things around in Windows just to keep anyone from becoming a real expert in how to keep it working! I have been poking Windows "under the hood" ever since Windows 3.1 first came out, and I have continued with every version of Windows since.

I can help you understand what can be done in Windows, and how to find the best way to do it in whichever version you are fortunate to have on your computer.
