Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

A student is usually most successful when fully engaged in a task. "Doing" is more engaging that just "listening". The more senses we can activate at one time (seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching), the more likely a child is to understand and retain new learning. Kids remember what they DO and SEE and SMELL and TASTE more easily than if they are only LISTENING. Praise is also a powerful motivator for a child if it is genuine and specific. Identifying how a child learns best is the key to progress.

My experience as a kindergarten teacher and as an elementary school principal has given me many opportunities to use the strategies mentioned above. Ongoing assessment of a child's strengths and needs is key to planning each lesson. I teach children using a combination of games (reading and math), active listening, sometimes flash cards, books of interest, and writing activities. I create a positive, friendly and supportive environment where skills are practiced and where success is celebrated.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an experienced early childhood educator and a retired elementary school principal. I would love to work with your elementary student to help him/her improve reading and writing skills. This growing skill level will also enhance confidence. Let me know if I can help.

Phonics

I am a retired kinder teacher, and have used the phonetic approach with many children. I am also a retired elementary school principal. We can begin the session with an assessment of your child's skills and gaps in using phonics, then build a plan incorporating instruction, review, and practice. I want it to be fun and with lots of variety in order to engage your child in the learning process. Let me know if this sounds like a match for your child and for you.

Reading

I am experienced with beginning-to-read activities, instruction, and practice for young children. I also incorporate books using the main idea of the story, and some "what-if" problem solving discussions. Reading if fun! Success leads to more success!
