With 6 years' experience as a music teacher in Peoria, I am looking forward to tutoring your students in music and other subjects. I teach piano and guitar to 25 or so students each year. My undergraduate coursework was at University of North Carolina in Pre-Law/Business and Piano Performance. I have studied piano with faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and improvisation with jazz greats Bud Conway and Jack Coker. Work experience in music includes Stage 7 Dance (San Diego), Bishop's School (La Jolla, CA), Tierrasanta High School (San Diego), all as accompanist and vocal coach, as well as many casual engagements. I have considerable experience in playing, teaching, and arranging for church worship.

Having home schooled our son, an ASU sophomore, from kindergarten through high school, and worked in diverse educational co-ops and events, I have vast experience in teaching various subjects and grade levels. I also have successfully taught many adults, as well as individuals with learning difficulties and special needs.

Reading

A good foundation is so important in reading and writing. My desire is to provide that for every student. My techniques are to stay with new material until the student demonstrates "ownership" of it before moving on to more difficult concepts, and to use small amounts of information at a time. This takes patience, but works every time! I am so rewarded when I see a student master language and read it on his own.

Elementary Math

A good foundation is so important in mathematics, reading and writing. My desire is to provide that for elementary students. My techniques are to stay with new material until the student completely understands it before moving on to more difficult issues, and to use small amounts of information at a time. This takes patience, but works every time!

Guitar

I have taught basic guitar for 6 years, with very gratifying results. Many of my students are currently playing publicly for church worship and other performances.

Music History

I studied music history at the undergraduate level, and teach many aspects in my private music lessons. My lessons include periods of music history, primary composers and artistic styles. I also suggest internet games and extracurricular reading on this subject for my students.

Phonics

I have used phonics exclusively to teach reading, even composing little songs about vowel sounds, etc. to make learning fun. Starting with a strong foundation of letter sounds, I have moved to two- and three-letter words, then on to longer words and full sentences. I am very interested in literacy, and would like opportunities to teach even adults to read.

Piano

I have successfully taught piano in my private studio since 2005. I teach traditional methods, with classical emphasis, as well as a strong improvisation program. Many of my students perform publicly for church worship and other programs.

Bible Studies

As an avid Bible reader since 1980, and having home schooled my son in Bible studies from kindergarten through high school, I am qualified to teach Old and New Testament to all ages. I also attended Bible school for 1 year in 1981-1982.

Needlework

Having run a needlework business in the 1980's, I am acquainted with many different types and styles of needle arts. I have successfully completed projects and taught my customers needlepoint, knitting, counted cross stitch, embroidery, latch hook and other needlework skills.
