I enjoy teaching basic math and science skills to students. It's important to understand the basics before moving on to more advanced topics. I take the hands-on approach to tutoring. In other words, I don't give the students the answers. They must work for the answers, and demonstrate an understanding of the concept before we move to the next concept.

My tutoring style is very flexible. I find that taking a complicated idea and presenting it in the simplest terms makes more sense than repeating the incomprehensible explanation given in some of the textbooks I've seen. If I can simplify a concept using apples, oranges, and the occasional pizza, I do it. These are tangible items that students can relate to. I most enjoy seeing the light bulb turn on. That's when I know I've made a breakthrough with a student. Learning is an accomplishment, but should also be fun.

Maryellen's subjects

####
Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is a great introduction to higher mathematics. I enjoy teaching the basics of algebra 1 because it is important for a student to have a good foundation in math, just like a house needs a good foundation. A good understanding of Algebra 1 will make all the subsequent math classes make more sense.

####
Algebra 2

Algebra 2 covers a wide variety of topics that can be confusing to the new Algebra 2 learner. If one explanation for solving a problem doesn't work, I try to find an explanation that will work for the student in terms the student can understand.

####
Prealgebra

Prealgebra lays the foundation for understanding high school and college algebra. A good understanding of prealgebra will make algebra and all future math classes easier to understand and more enjoyable.

####
Precalculus

I have a solid background in general arithmetic and algebra, which are important fundamentals to understanding precalculus.

####
Physical Science

Physical science is interesting because in encompasses a variety of topics such as chemistry, physics, and earth science to name a few. It's a general science rather than a speciality science, which makes it appealing to students and teachers.

####
Pharmacology

I am a CPhT with national certification. My coursework included pharmacology, dosage calculation, and pharmacy technician law. I also tutor anatomy and physiology as well as dosage calculation for nursing students at ITT Tech. I would like to request certification to tutor pharmacology.

####
TEAS

I currently tutor the math and science portions of the TEAS at Brown Mackie College. I am also proficient in English and reading. In addition, I am a nationally certified pharmacy technician (CPht) with licenses in Arizona and California.
