I taught Chinese and French in the Dual Immersion Programs at various Elementary Schools in Utah. I also teach high school/middle school French and Chinese. I LOVE learning and studying second languages. I learned Chinese first as a missionary in Taiwan, and second as a Master's student, studying in Qingdao last summer, and then for a whole year in The Chinese Flagship Program at The Ohio State University.
The Chinese Flagship program focuses on helping its students to be able to perform appropriately in Chinese culture, in their field, whether business, medicine, etc. at the professional level in China. My research focused on Cross-Cultural Communication, specifically how Chinese students studies in America affect their ability to communicate effectively in the Chinese work environment when they return to the mainland. That's why I say I can tutor people in developing their Interpersonal Relationship skills in the Chinese culture. Mainland China is still a very structured hierarchical society, and if you can learn to work your social network in China, or with Chinese people in general, you're Chinese language skills, no matter how limited they may be, will get you much further.
As far as additional qualifications go, I received an Advanced-Mid on my OPI for Chinese. My teachers have given me excellent recommendations for my speaking skills. This is where I feel I can be of most help to you. While my reading skills are advanced beyond that of your average returned missionary, I do not consider reading and writing to be my strong points. However I have no trouble with college Chinese textbook coursework. I can also explain to you how the writing system works. I can give you and show you how to use resources in helping you tackle the enormous task of learning to read and write in Chinese. I also have extensive experience in giving oral presentations in Chinese, recapping the research that I've done. I've also spent the past 12 years of my life studying languages. (My undergraduate studies were primarily focused on French language and cultural studies.) As I mentioned before, I've taught high school and elementary school for both French and Chinese.
You can be confident that my pronunciation is native-like,and my tones are dead on! I will be able to help you speak the language very well, if you have the time to put in. That's my one true guarantee.
