I am a retired Learning Disabilities Teacher who has been tutoring students since 2002. Having taught in the field of Special Education for 30 years has given me the opportunity to work with hundreds of students, with unique learning styles who perform below grade level in math, reading, and written language skills. My strengths include: my passion for and working knowledge of brain-based curriculum instruction, and my success in heightening the self-esteem of students via individual visually-based strategy interventions.

ADD/ADHD

With a Masters degree in Learning Disabilities and 30 years public school experience working with special education students, I believe I am an excellent candidate for teaching the subject ADD/ADHD. Having been a Learning Disabilities teacher since 1996 and a public school Speech/Language Therapist for over 20 years, I have had over hundreds of students on my caseloads with an ADD/ADHD diagnosis. Approximately 40-50% of the clients I have tutored have ADD/ADHD. My research review on the auditory system, my extensive professional training on brain-based language/learning principles, and what hundreds of students with ADD/ADHD have taught me about their learning systems, I have developed a theoretical basis of intervention strategies and assessment skills that have made significant changes in my students academically and socially. Both research and first hand experience have taught me that when visual cues are simultaneously attached to verbal instruction, students with attention weaknesses show marked improvement in their academic performance.

Elementary (K-6th)

Having been a public school Speech/Language Therapist for over 20 years and a Learning Disabilities Teacher for 9 years, I have extensive K-6 teaching experience. With the many hundreds of K-6 aged students I have had on my caseloads, I have successfully planned and provided effective individual teaching based on classroom curriculum in the areas of math, reading, and written language.

Not only do I have an Arizona Dept. of Education teaching certificate in Learning Disabilities, Emotional Handicapped, and Speech and Language Impaired, but I also hold a teaching certificate in Elementary Education.

Elementary Math

I have a Masters degree in Learning Disabilities and I have taught Learning Disabled students in the public schools for over 10 years. Learning Disabilities teachers teach math, reading, and written language.

English

I have taught English and language arts to students on my learning disabilities caseloads for over 10 years. Also, being a speech/language technician with over 20 years of experience teaching grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, syntax, sentence formation, and written language skills, I am confident in teaching English as a subject.

Phonics

My skills are strong in phonics, due to my public school speech/language therapy experience, where "phonetics" is a subject taught to students with weak articulation and language skills. Phonics is also a required course in the field of Speech/Language Pathology.

Having been a Specific Learning Disabilities teacher also has provided me with rich experience teaching many students "phonics", which is a core subject taught by Specific Learning Disabilities teachers.

Reading

With a Masters degree in Special Education, over 10 years teaching experience as a public school Specific Learning Disabilities teacher, + 20 years as a public school Speech/Language Therapist, I have taught hundreds and hundreds of students to read using the following reading programs; Recipe For Reading, Edmark Reading Program, SRA Reading Programs at all levels, Literature Based Reading Materials, and a myriad of phonetic reading programs. I am very familiar with the Brigance Test of Basic Skills and all its' reading subtests which I have used in the past to form I.E.P. reading goals for my learning disabled students who had I.E.P. reading goals. I am also certified to administer and score the Woodcock Johnson III Test, including all reading subtests of this test. In order for me to have earned a Masters degree in Special Education, I was required to take courses at the graduate level, focusing on effective and current reading methodologies.

Special Needs

I am state certified to teach the following:

Speech/Language Technician k-12
Learning Disabilities Teacher k-8
Emotionally Handicapped Teacher K-8
General Education Teacher K-8

I have a Masters degree in Special Education, and my undergraduate degree is in Speech Pathology and Audiology.
Having been a Learning Disabilities teacher for over 8 years and my 20+ years experience as a pubic school Speech/Language Therapist, I have had scores of children with special needs diagnosis on my caseloads. As a Speech/Language Therapist, I have worked one on one with special needs students and also in special education classrooms of students with the following diagnosis:

Mildly Mentally Disabled, Moderately Mentally Disabled, Severely Mentally Disabled, Cerebral Palsy, Fragile-X Syndrome, Asperger's Syndrome, and other autistic spectrum disorders. My first hand experience working with special needs children makes me an excellent candidate to tutor students with special needs. My extensive professional growth and coursework in this area of special education also makes me an excellent candidate to tutor students with special needs.

Spelling

As a learning disabilities teacher and public school speech/language therapist, I have taught spelling skills to scores of students. In fact, I have devised a visually-based spelling technique that has proven quite effective. A former student of mine, who was a very poor speller, won the spelling bee contest for his grade level after he learned and used this very powerful spelling strategy. For many students, I have found drawing a visual configuration or box around the spelling word allows the student to see the word as one entire unit, and this has been very effective for so many students. When students practice this 7 step strategy on approximately 5 words each eve on Monday through Thursday, then by Friday they are well prepared to take the weekly spelling test with confidence and with great success. Retention of these spelling words is high too, especially when the weekly spelling words are taught via a meaningful writing assignment.

Study Skills

I am state certified to teach in the following areas:
Learning Disabilities
Emotionally Handicapped
General Education
Speech/Language Therapy

Having a Masters degree in Special Education, having been a Learning Disabilities Teacher for over 10 years, and my 20+ years teaching experience as a public school Speech/Language Therapist makes me an excellent candidate to tutor students with special needs.

Having taught for many decades in the field of special education, I have served, on most yearly caseloads, students with the following special needs diagnosis:

Mildly Mentally Handicapped, Moderately Mentally Handicapped, Severely Mentally Handicapped, Fragile-X Syndrome and other Autistic Spectrum Disorders plus Cerebral Palsy and Traumatic Brain Injured students. Theses students with special needs were seen either one on one in my Speech classroom setting and/or in their self contained special education classroom setting.

I have a great amount of experience collaborating and co-teaching in Mildly Mentally Handicapped classrooms at the elementary level. I served as an integral team member on many special education teams where I worked closely with the school psychologists and colleagues in making placement and curriculum decisions for students with special needs.

I believe my extensive teaching experience working with these types of children, and my commitment to current special needs research and professional growth makes me highly qualified to tutor students who have been diagnosed with special needs.
