My name is Iris and I have been an educator for the past 29 years. My road to becoming an educator I feel was a Divine appointment. I was a Business major in college and when I graduated I knew I did not want to work in the business world but I was not sure what I wanted to do. After graduation I went to Seoul, Korea for two years as a missionary for my church. I taught English as a Second Language classes and Bible classes to adults. This is where I discovered my love for teaching. Upon returning to the United States, I substitute taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District. This is where I discovered I needed training to become a successful teacher. I returned to school and earned my Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction K-12 and my teaching certificate. I became a public school teacher in 1988 and have been working as a public school educator since that time. I have held a variety of positions: I have taught every grade Kindergarten through 5th grade with most of my experience being in Kindergarten, First and Third Grade; I have worked as an English as a Second Language teacher to adults, taught Adult Basic Education classes, substitute taught in high school and most recently I have been working as a Reading Interventionist. The last 4 years I have worked full time as a Reading Interventionist pulling students from their regular classroom and giving them extra assistance in reading. Prior to the last four years I worked as a Reading Interventionist half of my day and taught Reading and Language Arts in a classroom the other half of my day so I have a lot of experience giving help to students struggling in reading. This year I will take on a new challenge in public education, I will work part time as a Reading Interventionist and part time as a Reading Coach for teachers in grades K-3. I look forward to this new opportunity to share my knowledge of Reading Instruction with classroom teachers to assist them in becoming better Reading teachers.
I know how to individualize instruction based upon the specific needs of the student and I believe this will make me an excellent tutor to assist you or your loved one turn from being a struggling reader to a lifelong learner because reading is no longer a struggle. The first thing I will do as a tutor will be to assess the need(s) of the student. I will begin with the lowest skill level and/or reading strategy needed and I will build up from there. Because of my many years in education I have a variety of tools I use to help struggling readers yet at the same time I am open to new proven methods and will research them if I find the strategies I use are not working. What may have proven effective for one student may not work for another and my goal is to find what works for the student I am tutoring. If the student needs phonics instruction, I will give them phonics instruction but it will not be in isolation because the point of learning phonics is to enhance reading so the phonics work practiced will be used in text during each session. If the student needs reading strategies to assist them with comprehending the text then I will give them instruction in reading strategies. If vocabulary, fluency, or phonological awareness are the areas of weakness then these will be addressed. My goal is to help the student love reading and open up all the opportunities afforded to proficient readers. Whatever is needed to accomplish this goal will be used to empower the student.
I have an Arizona Department of Education Certificate in Elementary Education K-8 with endorsements in the following areas: Reading Specialist K-12; English as a Second Language, K-12; Structured English Immersion, K-12; Early Childhood Endorsement, Birth - Age 8; I have taught all grade levels K-5 and have serviced struggling readers in grades K-8. My job for this school year is a Reading Coach to teachers and Reading Interventionist to students in grades K-3.
I have a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction K-12 as well as AZ teaching certificates in Elementary Education and Adult Education. I have taken coursework on the methods of teaching English/Language Arts. I have taught English to Elementary age students and I have taught English in Adult Basic Education classes.
I possess a Reading Specialist endorsement on my Arizona Teaching Certificate. Part of my coursework to qualify for this endorsement was strategies for teaching phonics. I have had additional training with the 95 Percent Group which is an educational consulting and professional development company which produces diagnostic screeners and materials for teaching phonics.
I have a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction K-12. During my training, study skills was an area touched upon because all students, especially the older ones, need this ability. I worked 2 years in Adult Basic Education in which I assisted students in enhancing their skill base, including study skills, to prepare to take the GED.
