Hello, Parents and Tutees! I am a 19-year-old college sophomore, I attend Arizona State University (downtown) and I am currently working as a tutor for kids aged kinder through 8th grade! I love my job because it requires me to make education fun and effective. I have many activities up my sleeves to help the little ones with a variety of education standards, from phonics recognition and knowing the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes to adding three digit numbers and recognizing fractions as parts of a whole. My job requires me to help my kids master these standards as quickly and in as fun a way as possible; which means I am very goal oriented. I love working with children and helping them achieve their highest potential.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor in these specific subjects because for two semesters, four days a week for twelve hours a week I dedicate my time to educating and furthering the potential of elementary school kids who come from a title one school. I tutor in math, reading and writing. Each semester I'm given two kids, one from k-2nd and the other from 3-8th so the range of kids I'm tutoring is varied and gives me the experience I need to help me understand how to work with various age groups. I use methods such as sports or field games, painting, arts and crafts to make learning fun and easy. I can be resourceful to make the learning experience as enjoyable as possible, whether its everyday household items like macaroni for a math activity or toilet papers rolls for a grammar activity.

English

Throughout High School I took AP and Honors English classes because it is one of my favorite subjects. In English and in writing I really excel. I am well read and have a lot of tricks and tips to make vocabulary and writing a breeze.

Literature

From 2009 to 2011 I took honors English which taught me how to understand the deeper meaning of American and Greek literature. In 2012, my senior year in high school, I took AP English Literature which focused on European works, I had an awesome teacher who pushed me to think in abstract ways to grasp not just the initial meaning but also the hidden meanings in a work. I have read many classics such as of mice and men, to kill a mockingbird, grapes of wrath, the scarlet letter, the great Gatsby, things fall apart, 1984, the invisible man and many more.

Reading

From a young age I have always loved to read. I think its important for kids to learn to love and enjoy reading as much as I did! I personally started reading before I entered kindergarten because my parents instilled in me how valuable being well read is; and too this day I still love it. My motto with reading is that: there's no rush! reading is meant to expand your mind not frustrate you. when working with elementary aged kids I always say "take your time" and "sound it out" because why rush through what could be an awesome story. I strongly believe in going at the pace appropriate for what the child needs to make the learning experience as smooth as possible.
