My name is La Wanda and I welcome an opportunity to introduce you to my world of learning, where subjects become fun and relevant. For example math, it's a lot of numbers, but I show you how to make them come alive, which makes the subject easier to understand. Teaching is not a job for me, it is a gift and it is a passion ... something I love to do.
I currently work for the Higley Unified School District, HUSD, as a district tutor, and certified substitute teacher for the past 6 years. Students love my teaching ability and I'm often referred back to tutor some of the same students throughout the whole school year.
I also work for the district as a Homebound Education Instructor. Some of my students have been with me for as long as 3 years because I have an unusual way of helping them grasp the most challenging subjects. Parents really welcome the sight of their children learning, loving it and understanding it. And if safety is a concern, please know that the HUSD requires a back-ground check and fingerprint card and both of them I have.
In addition to my teaching career, I have a history of on-the-job training and formal training as a Network Engineer, Accountant and Project Manager. Working and training in corporate America has given me a rich work history that I draw from as I guide and prepare you for higher learning.
In regards to my tutoring methods, it is a given that a one-size fits all will not work. However there are two methods that I use often and find to be helpful. The direct approach works best when you have little or no knowledge about a given subject. It simply means that I am more actively involved in discussing and demonstrating the subject. The indirect approach works best when you are familiar with a subject, but need prompting to help remember or understand certain areas. This is best achieved with pointed questions that help you extract from what you previously learned.
