Hi, my name is Shannon. I wanted to tell you about my myself. First, I will give you a brief history
of my background. Next, I will cover my teaching methods. Then, I will summarize my beliefs about learning.
First and foremost I am a father. I spend most of my time raising my girls and making sure they are safe and happy. Before they were born, I was an adventurer by heart and involved in many activities that centered around teaching children about motivation and self reliance. I worked at a few camps where we focused on team building exercises and building confidence. I worked at an orphanage in Mexico that taught me a lot about the realities many children face outside of the U.S. I walked into that job thinking I was going to teach those children about strength and courage but I was happily surprised when I realized that they were the ones teaching me. Since then, I have come to realize that every interaction is a learning experience and we are all capable of teaching each other something as long as we are receptive enough to receive the lesson no matter if it is one based on life or education.
After my experiences as a young man, I decided to go to college to broaden my horizons and to pursue my goal of exploring the inner workings of the mind and delving into what makes us tick as humans. My background is mostly psychological and biological research involving the brain. I have worked in research areas and published findings in behavioral sciences that deal with cognition, environmental effects on decision making and executive functions
. I have also conducted molecular research on sub units of voltage gated calcium and potassium channels. These investigations focused on looking into the developmental expression of these genes in the inner ear and the roles they play in channel production and function. These channels play large roles in orchestrating mechanotransduction and sensory perception through electrical signaling pathways of the brain. A very extensive background in behavioral sciences, molecular biology
, organic chemistry
, cellular biology and neurobiology was needed and used to perform these duties.
I went to college and learned many subjects with an emphasis on psychology
and biology. Most of the classes were very difficult and I learned how to break down the information and process it using a variety of techniques. Everything starts from learning the basics and moving from there. I can teach many subjects from the basics all the way to some of the most challenging criteria found in college. My emphasis on teaching primarily begins with discovering what type of learning style someone prefers (visual, contextual, audible, or a combination) and what boundaries they have within learning the subject whether it is motivational, difficulties in understanding, or if they suffer from a lack of confidence. By building a positive report, I can use my lessons as a vehicle to guide these children towards success and teach them ways in which they can learn to identify their own boundaries in life and use them as stepping stones towards achievement instead of walls that restrict their growth and potential. My lessons are tailored for each individual student to meet their needs and expectations of success. The first few sessions will be used to build a foundation and see where they are currently in the subject matter and what steps will be taken to give them the tools and confidence they need to succeed.
I believe that anyone can do what they dream of doing with the right foundation and work ethics. I have an ability to communicate complex knowledge in a simple fashion that makes it easier for the person to grasp and understand. We can work together to find what learning styles and teaching styles work best to facilitate a positive learning environment that helps them towards their goals and is fun as well. Science
is not a mystery, and anyone is capable of learning it if they are willing and motivated enough to try.
