Hiring a tutor means you and your child have accessed the most effective way to overcome learning difficulties and permanently acquire reusable skills for both academic and life success. I begin by focusing on the learning style and natural capabilities of each student and adapt my coaching techniques to their level of experience and expertise. In this way we build their confidence in their own ability to master the English skills they will need for academic excellence.
They will develop study habits and skills in all the basics of language
arts – phonics
, composing essays, reading
comprehension, critical thinking, public speaking
and they will even be coached in their personal resources for creative writing and speaking. As my students experience consistent, incremental success in learning how to handle the English language, they come to enjoy reading and writing for its own sake and homework completion becomes highly motivating and automatic!
My very thorough education in English language related topics culminated in a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature
from Whitman College, Walla Walla, WA. My training in education comes from a Masters in Religious Education from Luther Seminary, St Paul, MN.
Over the years I have also done extensive reading and research and writing of curriculum both for business
management venues and religious group studies which were then presented in an open discussion format. The curriculum worked best in one on one training situations and so that became the way I trained the trainers and applied it myself. The tutoring learning model not only accelerated their mastery of the subject, but in the longer term it also gave them confidence to continually improve on their own.
I have taught/mentored one on one from all age groupings except very young child and will soon be working with those agile young minds also. Most recently, I have been honored to work with middle school and high school students and a number of undergraduate and graduate students where the curriculum – which included some of my own writings - and its presentation was called “fully engaging,” “an enjoyable way to learn,” and “immediately usable in more than one place.”
My special focus in this younger age group will be on those agile minds that have been stymied in their ability to read and write even the most basic English sentences. Because they were brought up in homes where neglect and abuse eventually sent them into foster care, these children were denied access to the verbal and emotional support and many times even the ‘elementary’ schooling they needed. Even so they have used their keen wits to work around this obstacle in the most amazing ways. Equipping them and anyone who faces challenges in mastering the English language with a verbal/aural/intellectual toolkit that they can use for the rest of their lives will be a delightful enterprise and immensely rewarding in itself.
I attended Asbury Seminary, Wilmore KY, and Eastern Baptist Seminary, Philadelphia PA,where I majored in Biblical languages, exegesis, and hermeneutics. My studies there gave me access to 'in depth' exposition of ancient texts that has served my mentees and students well for the last 40 years. I completed this journey of discovery at Luther Seminary, St Paul, MN, where I received a Masters in Religious Education. That degree focused on childhood through adult education and provided insights into how we humans grow as spiritual persons, how we are changed and even healed psychologically by experiencing God's love, and how that growth and healing 'acts out' in our relationships, careers and personal values.
I have researched and taught the linguistic, social and cultural background of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. I also always present the life situation in which the many different authors found themselves, because that and the inspiration of God's Spirit is what gave them reason to speak out at that particular time and place in history
This degree along with decades of leading and teaching individuals and small groups prepared me to work one on one with elementary, high school, college age and young to octegenarian adults. I presently mentor eight young men ranging in age from 14 to 29 and also many older folks from the small group Bible studies
. However, I use pedagogical methods that work well with all ages and would be delighted to work with Elementary students.
of Biblical interpretation does not come solely from diligent research into the many facts that we must gather to speak intelligently about someone's words that may have been spoken and recorded thousands of years ago. Being equipped to understand 'them' and make the leap to today's application to our life situation comes with an in-depth understanding of the God who chose to speak with those people and why he never really gave up on them...or us. May I be privileged to share that story with you.
