I began working with Microsoft Access in 1999 as a rapid development tool for smaller departmental databases. I quickly saw a need for users to understand the power of Access as a database and a reporting tool.
I have conducted Access training for workforce development centers at local colleges to train local area business on the benefits of using Access within their companies. I have also developed and executed a training plan for nationally known chemical company in Carlsbad, New Mexico. I currently design Microsoft Access interfaces for Microsoft SQL Server databases for larger companies.
My approach to training is make sure students understand what a database actually is and how can benefit from having a well written database. I will work with students based on their existing knowledge of databases and Access to determine the direction best suited for the student.
I look at Access training similar to constructing a building. A building needs a foundation before walls can be built, walls are needed before a roof can be built. Access is the same way, a clear understanding of what you need your database to do is needed. Then data tables are needed to store data, queries to explore and manipulate that data. Forms are needed to capture and display data and ultimately needed reports to view and print data.
I take a very systematic approach to learning access, one in which I believe students will benefit the most.
