I believe that everyone should be forever curious and have the opportunity to explore the universe of knowledge. Natural curiosity makes one seek answers to the “why” and “how” questions from early childhood throughout adulthood. Natural curiosity can be encouraged and guided in such a way that knowledge is naturally absorbed by the individual as he follows a path of exploration. Effective teachers, tutors, and mentors assist their students in discovering the pathway and to overcome obstacles in their explorations by helping them to understand and utilize multiple paths to their knowledge goals. Ultimately, it is the thought process, the ability to analyze the information available and to learn to critically evaluate one's surroundings that is learned. Once that happens, anything, knowledge of any subject can be mastered.
A firm grasp of fundamentals establishes the base upon which to build knowledge and expertise in any subject. Reading is the first step, and the most critical, to attaining any knowledge. The second step, Writing is the ability to put one's thoughts into an organized and coherent form that others can understand. That allows one to record knowledge and experience gained and to pass that on to others. Arithmetic, basic computational skills, the ability to manipulate numeric information enables one to answer some of the “how” questions by using logical reasoning to arrive at numerical values that can be used to compare and verify, prove or disprove a thesis.
I have taught a variety of subjects from the elementary level, to high school algebra, basic electronics and math for adults. I have taught children and adults computer basics, office software, and photo editing software. I taught Junior Achievement business and economics for JA groups from 5th grade into Junior and Senior year of high school. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra is the mathematical step that follows basic arithmetic. Arithmetic operations are limited to 4 operations that are the basis for all the math that follows.
Algebra is the study of the rules of operations that allow one to analyze and evaluate measurable and observable phenomena in our environment. Algebra is the branch of mathematics that is but a small part of the language that allows us to understand and describe to other investigators the behaviors that we observe in nature. Algebra introduces us to the use of variables in the place of numeric values. It is the tool by which we begin to analyze physical relationships through the use of formulas that describe the interactions between the different elements of an event.
Microsoft Excel is a powerful tool that I used extensively in my 20+ year career in electronics. I used Excel to calculate component value changes required to tune the response characteristics in temperature compensation networks on one project. Statistical Process Control methodology was implemented on a project that was transitioning from prototype to production through the use of statistical analysis functions in Excel. When statistical analyses are used to analyze measured process variations as they occur during production cycles, operators can be alert to changes in parameters before critical parameters run beyond tolerance limits.
Acquiring an extensive vocabulary is a possible result of many different activities. The most effortless and natural are the first expressions of need which give rise to the beginnings of the most basic conversation. Satisfaction of those early needs, encourages use of the language, which in turn lays the initial groundwork to gain linguistic proficiency. It is that proficiency that enables the advancement of reading comprehension.
A person's vocabulary increases with experience and exposure. Memorization of word lists is also another, but this is not necessarily the best method for all learners. Some individuals are better served by learning about the root form of words, and then discovering the various ways they are modified and changed according to their usage in context. There is no one “right” way to learn anything, including vocabulary. Learning style varies from person to person and is somewhat variable for any individual from day to day, depending on subject and even mood. The teacher in the one-on-one teaching environment has the luxury of the opportunity to customize the presentation and material to the specific needs of the student of the moment.
