Several months ago I returned from a three year stay in Taiwan, during which time I worked in an all-Chinese environment immersing myself in the language and local culture managing an upscale restaurant. The experience granted me valuable insights not only into the nuances of everyday speech, but also the ways in which people who were raised in the culture think. My approach to tutoring is to first assess the level of comprehension the student has in the subject and the pace at which the student is able to absorb new information. When it comes to language, especially the Chinese language, I like to focus on pronunciation and intonation, since there are so many homophones in Chinese, these two factors are key, and are often most difficult for non-native speakers. Aside from my restaurant work, I have spent an additional two years in Taiwan as a missionary, during which all of my time was devoted to teaching activities, including conducting weekly English classes as a service to congregation and community members, as well as volunteer English teaching at local elementary schools. I have also worked as a one-on-one English tutor in Taiwan. Thank you for reading, I hope to hear from you soon!
