I am incredibly passionate about helping young adults with disabilities succeed in high school (academically, socially, and behaviorally), graduate on time, develop college ready skills, develop job skills, plan for future career and post secondary education, and develop necessary functional skills to be a valuable member of society.
For the past 10 years, I have worked in the high school setting as a special education teacher where I have supported young adults with disabilities be successful in high school. The various classes that I have taught include: Career Development, Basic English, Transition Classes, and Academic Support. In addition to working for the public school system, I have also worked for a transition day program in the community and worked with Special Olympics in developing Unified Sports programs.
Through my experiences, I have worked with individuals with a multitude of disabilities including individuals with Autism, Asperger's, Specific Learning Disabilities (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Auditory and Visual Processing), ADD/ADHD, Cognitive Disabilities, Cerebral Palsy, Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities, Traumatic Brain Injury, Visual Impairments, Speech and Language Impairments, and Hard of Hearing.
Language skills include intermediate Spanish and intermediate American Sign Language (ASL). Previously, I taught at a school that held the deaf and hard of hearing program for the district and had several students who were Deaf in my classroom.

For the past 10 years, I have worked with individuals with ADD/ADHD in the public school system. Individuals with ADD/ADHD benefit from a variety of learning strategies, including shortened lesson assignments and lecturing, one on one learning, redirection, direct instruction, task analysis, repetition, and minimized distractions.
I have had a variety of experience and training in working with individuals with Aspergers, including providing support in the area of Social Thinking and Executive Functioning Skills. My Master's is in Curriculum and Instruction for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which provided me with a lot of insight and strategies into the academic, social and communication areas that one with Aspergers may experience.
I have 10 years of teaching experience, a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and over 300 conference and trainings areas in the areas of ASD. I have taught and tutored many students with ASD.
As a special education teacher in high school, I believe that high school should prepare one for his/her career goals after high school, so a lot of my lessons were career based. I taught a variety of career classes including Career Development, Career Exploration, and Transitions. In addition, I have experience helping students follow the steps for college and jobs readiness.
As a high school special-education English teacher, the majority of my students had dyslexia and difficulty with reading. I have had success using numerous strategies and programs to help students with dyslexia achieve academic success.
A school that I taught at for 9 years had a Deaf and hard of hearing program, so we had a higher percentage of students who were hard of hearing. Often, they were placed in my classes. I am versed on best practices and strategies for students who are hard of hearing. I also have intermediate skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and have a certificate in the studies of deafness.
I have taught special education in the high school setting for 10 years, and have worked with students with a wide range of ability levels and disabilities. My Bachelor's Degree is in Special Education K-12, and my Master's Degree is in Instruction and Curriculum for Autism Spectrum Disorders.
