My tutoring experience first began in high school junior year. I would sometimes tutor my friends and classmates on concepts of algebra such as solving quadratic equations, adding and subtracting algebraic fractions, and graphing linear and quadratic equations. This early experience with tutoring teaches you that anyone can learn math, but you have to find a way to communicate with them and adapt to their learning approach.
I also tutored my reading teacher's adopted son in intermediate algebra during my days as an Estrella Mountain Community College student. I would help him with adding and subtracting algebraic expressions and fractions. The algebraic expressions confused him at first because he was intimidated by letters being mixed in with numbers. I told him don't worry, just think of one these letters as apples and the other set as oranges. He was still a little slow, but started to come around, this I did back in 2003.
I am currently spending the fall semester of 2013 as a Estrella Mountain Community College math tutor. I am tutoring in algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus I-III. I very much enjoy what I am doing, using my knowledge to help other people, and it is proves to be a profound learning experience for me in terms of my listening and communication skills. Before hire and after the interview, all tutors were put through a two day training course. The course covered how to give positive reinforcement, identifying the students learning style, and engaging the student by asking them how much they know and work from there.
I first learned Algebra 1 through a software disk program that my dad got me in high school. It was not easy for me to learn it but I kept practicing and started to get the hang of it. Gradually, mathematics became second nature to me.
When I was in high school, my father bought me disks with math programs on them. The math content on the disks were Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. I practiced and mastered them all during my downtime after school. This attributed greatly to my understanding of mathematics today.
I first learned precalculus in high school. It was easy for me since I could apply all the complex algebra to it. It also goes back to back with trigonometry, which I studied straight out the text book during my down time.
