Hi, my name is Mandy H. I am a certified and highly qualified elementary school K-8 grade teacher in Arizona. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Arizona State University in 2001. I began substitute teaching and tutoring privately after college, which exposed me to a lot of different teaching and learning techniques. I have experience tutoring math, reading, and writing. I also have experience tutoring students with a variety of special needs including ADHD and other learning disabilities. It was this, which pushed me to receive my Master’s degree in Educational Intervention from Ottawa University. This program taught me how to adapt my teaching to the unique needs of students.
During this time, I had begun teaching at an urban charter school in Phoenix as a Saturday School instructor in the areas of reading and writing for seventh and eighth graders. The following year I began teaching fourth grade for the same school. This continued for two years. In my final year there, I taught in the Elementary Special Education Department. While in this situation, I excelled at making adaptions and modifications to make sure that all of my students were successful. After this, I worked as a fourth grade teacher for another school where I used my skills to ensure success again.
I have a disabling condition myself, which helps me be a better teacher and tutor. I understand many of the frustrations that parents and students may feel when dealing with social and academic struggles that may be unique to some families. My own experiences help parents and students understand how to advocate and work with the school systems to ensure success for the student, which is why I became an educator ten years ago. I am proud to be a role model for students and teach them that everyone can be whatever they wish, as long as you want it bad enough! My teaching style can best be described as adaptable. Not every student learns the same way, so before I begin tutoring someone, I want to know as much as possible about the student so that I can use what he or she are great at to help them overcome weaknesses. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am familiar with several reading strategies that can assist a student when taking standardized screening tests. For example this duty and may want to use a highlighting strategy to answer multiple-choice questions. This could also work for any type of reading comprehension exercises that would require students to recall information about what they read. I've also found that the use of such strategies can also be used to reduce the anxiety that the student feels while taking reading comprehension tests.
In my 10 years of teaching, I have taught about 20 students with ADD/ADHD. I spent a lot of time making accommodations for these students in group learning situations, as well as one on one tutoring situations. I have experiences helping families and schools develop IEP's or 504 plans for these students, so that they could achieve their academic and life goals.
American history is a fascinating subject to me. I especially like to help students discover information regarding the civil rights movement and Underground Railroad. I believe that this particular period in history has taught Americans as well as others the accepting of differences. I believe that America is a wonderful country.

When working with this high functioning students I developed a personalized, but research based approach to education. I am able use behavior modification with reward systems to help students be successful in all aspects of their lives. This includes social interactions with family and friends. This process can include the use of social stories to help model appropriate behavior for these students. I am also aware that over stimulation can be one of the culprits of undesirable behaviors I am familiar with brushing and other ways to decrease over stimulation, and how simple modifications to environment can help these students become focused and successful in a variety of situations. I am very familiar with IEP's and have helped implement a variety of goals and outcomes.
