ACT English
English is the most widely known and used languages in the world. It is also one of the hardest to master because it borrows from so many other languages. My goal is to teach my students the rules, exceptions, structure, and proper use of the English language. This knowledge is the foundation of good communications at home, at work, and in everyday life.
ACT Math
I enjoy working with numbers. Basic math, Algebra, and Geometry are my strong points. Realizing that not everyone catches on to math immediately, I am very patient in my lessons.
ACT Reading
Accurate reading is not just an important tool to use at school. It is vital in business, in the home, and possibly in emergency situations. In this age of e-books, it is both enjoyable and beneficial to read a classic novel, short story, or poem. This is the goal that I stress to my students.
Algebra 1
I love to work with numbers. Math was a large part of my degree program. I have tutored grade school through high school in basic math, Algebra, Geometry, and Business Math. Areas include numbers, integers, sets, and equations. For younger students, I can teach them to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
Algebra 2
I love working with numbers, and Algebra provides the ideal problems to hold my attention. Helping students to comprehend the wonderful order of Math is a great joy for me. It is like exploring a new world together.
American History
Rather than focusing on dates and places, I look at history as a series of causes and events. My students learn to examine the motives and motivations of the people involved. This takes history out of the dusty library books and makes it come alive.
Astronomy
As an avid space enthusiast and consultant, I have been involved in the space sciences since I was seven years old. I love to teach people about the wonders of our vast universe. I have instructed at the college level in Astronomy.
Chess
I have played Chess for 52 years including tournaments up and down the west coast. My current rating is 1881 (Class A). I am a very patient tutor for beginners and those who want to improve their game.
Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a condition that requires patience and understanding to be able to teach subjects properly. I have taught Math, Science, and English successfully to several students with this condition. I am experienced in coping with disabilities such as Dyslexia.
Elementary (K-6th)
My experience in teaching elementary school students goes back many years. I helped my three nieces with their homework and later tutored some of the neighbor's children. Great patience and understanding are required to teach young people well, and I feel that I reflect these qualities. I concentrate on reading, writing, and spelling fundamentals along with basic math and elementary science.
Elementary Math
Whatever a person's age, getting a basic understanding of Math is very important in our lives. Many people do not realize that hardly any time of the day goes by that we are not working with numbers. As a very patient tutor, I am happy to help my students build a solid foundation of Math skills.
Elementary Science
The mysteries of the world we live in and the immense universe around us are subjects for intense curiosity. In teaching elementary science, I learn new things along with my students. This makes it fun and challenging for everyone.
English
Like math, English is a tool we use in everyday life. Many personal and international problems have arisen because of improper use of English. I instill in my students the importance of correct English usage as a valuable tool to help them through day-to-day living.
Phonics
I have extensive (40 years) experience in teaching both children and adults in correct spelling, pronunciation, and grammar. My average grades in English subjects is B+ in both high school and college.
Prealgebra
I have always had an interest for Algebra. I like working with numbers and equations, and I am a patient teacher. Good math skills are very important in everyday life, and my teaching reflects this.
Reading
English is a difficult language to master, not only for foreigners, but also for us natives. Correct reading skills open up a whole new world of understanding the meaning of novels, short stories, poems, and learning materials. Armed with such skills, a student can find it much easier to get through school. In my tutoring, I try to make that happen.
Spelling
Since English borrows its words from so many other languages, it is difficult to learn to spell. I go over with my students not only the rules of spelling, but also the exceptions to those rules. I try to make learning a fun and relaxing experience.
