About Elizabeth

I high school English for three years, and an ACT Reading and English class for two years. My students' scores have always gone up, and I love working with students and all of their interests to maximize learning when I tutor. I think the entire idea of kids not liking school is based on the fact that people continue to use outdated methods and boring lessons, or "busy work." Learning should be fun, engaging, active, and most of all, relatable to one's life. If necessary, we can negotiate the price. My goal is to make a difference in students' lives, so they can go on to be the best they can be in life. I high school English for three years, and an ACT Reading and English class for two years. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I am familiar with the Classics, having studied Homer, Plato, Euripides, and Shakespeare. I hold a B.A. in English, which I received in 2008, and am currently working on my Masters in Education in Reading.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently taking classes in Graduate school to become a Reading Specialist; we work heavily on building reading comprehension in early grades. Also, I am currently tutoring students from Kindergarten to sixth grade at a school district I work for. I have also taught students at the primary level in Africa, and I have also worked with younger students through projects and field experience in Graduate School.

ESL/ESOL

As far as my knowledge of teaching ESL goes, I have taken multiple classes and professional development about teaching English as a second (or in your case third) language. I also have experience to back it up. I helped and encouraged many ESL students for my three years as a high school English teacher. I've also taught English as a second language in Africa last summer, and I am currently an ESL tutor at a large school district.

Phonics

Although I majored in English, and then taught high school English for three years, I am still qualified for this job due to past experiences. For example, I went to Africa last summer and worked with their primary students. I am on the verge of completing my Masters of Education in Reading at Harding University, and have taken all the classes dealing with emerging learners.

Study Skills

As a student who has lasted all the way into graduate school, along with teaching for three years, I have learned it is important to keep your materials in order so you know where to find them when you need them. It is important to study each content area you are learning at least an hour a night, and it is extremely important how you study is relevant to you. If you like writing, write a journal entry about what you learned, and what you don't understand about the material. Students can also write a song about math or theme of a novel. Another important tool for studying is making flashcards for the content vocabulary and formulas for math and science classes. This way you have a large amount of background knowledge to draw from as you continue studying. The most important thing is to not burn yourself out. Study for 20-30 minutes, then take a ten minute break, and repeat. This way you won't overwhelm yourself and get frustrated, which is a bad environment for studying.
