I have a degree in English. I have been working in Special Education at the elementary level for the last 25 years. I have worked on math, reading and writing with all these students. I have developed my own plans at times and done research in how to best teach these children. I also have worked with children in the lower end of their learning. I have helped to show them how to take tests and how to improve their individual reading needs. I recently retired from education and would like to become a tutor to help with any child's learning needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in an k-5th grand elementary school for the last 25 years. I enjoy working with the 3rd through 6th graders the best as they have a more mature way about them. I can always modify a difficult subject to the age of the student. I love working with children and seeing them "get" the meaning of a problem.

Phonics

I worked with learning disability students for a long time. I have used phonics in helping them to read. I also like to point out little words inside of big words to get students to figure out a word. I use the alphabet in getting the child to learn sounds of each letter and then putting the sounds together to understand the word. Manipulating these letters, gives the student hands-on experience, which they enjoy.

Reading

We can work with phonics and simple reading books.

I have a number of reading activities geared for second graders that I used when I taught second grade reading in Summer School.

Special Needs

I have worked with learning, and cognitively learning students, and somehow have found a way for them to learn. I use a quite a bit of imagination to show them how much fun it is to learn.

Study Skills

It is important for students to know the type of question being asked in order to answer questions. You need to read the question in the book you are studying and then go back and read the material. This way you will be more accurate in finding the correct answer to the question.

Sometimes putting Main ideas on an index card also helps to remember information. Summarizing a particular part helps to understand the readings and will help you later on in answering test questions.

Your students are halfway through their school year. Everyone should be advancing in their studies. If a child is still having problems, then a parent or teacher should be finding help for them. There are good tutors out there to whom one can turn to get that needed aid. Don't be afraid to reach out and get more help for your child's added needs.

There are many students in dire need of English and study skills. Oftentimes they are afraid to come forward to ask for help. I am there for them as I have been in the education institution for twenty-five years and have recently retired from Wisconsin, one of the best states leading in education. I will go the lengths of helping a student with a problem in learning. If it is getting back... read more

Don't be afraid to contact a tutor for whatever needs you have. Sometimes we as tutors can only help you if you tell us your needs. Don't be afraid to explain what it is that will help you the most. I will attempt many methods to find the best way to help you. I also would like to know what is the best way for you to learn as that helps tremendously when it comes to the technique I will use... read more
