Each student is special to me. Therefore, I will not give up until "they get it"! Each of us learns in "our own way" so I will find the best way for you, and yours, to learn. That is, if students don't already know how they learn best, I'll figure it out! Teaching is my life! I've been doing it all my life. In high school, I belonged to "Future Teachers." I started tutoring during my second semester of college and have never stopped. My favorite subjects are math and Spanish. Math is my very best subject. Spanish is a favorite because I speak it fluently having grown up in South America where my father drilled oil wells.

For fifteen years now, I have been teaching and tutoring Spanish to all ages from Kindergarten to some in their 90s. I was the Spanish teacher at a private school for 2 1/2 years teaching all students in the school, K-8. As I already mentioned, I began teaching math while attending college, almost 30 years ago. Two years ago, I began teaching school age kids a variety of subjects and actually home schooled one of them for about 8 months and another for about 3 months. It turns out that teaching is my forte! I would be honored to work with you and/or your children.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have always been a student of the English language, and always will be. I am a good speller with a good vocabulary. Some of my favorite pass times are crossword puzzles and just about any word game. Growing up, my mother insisted on perfect grammar being spoken at all times. Therefore, English was always very easy for me. In college, I had a very special grammar course which solidified my technical expertise in grammar. A second instructor in college was able to instill a love of literature that I had not previously had. I would love to help you prepare for the English section of the ACT exam.

ADD/ADHD

One of my sons has ADHD and the other has ADD. I helped them all the way through school to learn to cope with and compensate for it. In order to be able to help them, I researched and studied the two conditions, their challenges, and methods for teaching them to compensate for and/or overcome the learning disabilities that accompany (are inevitably a part of) ADD/ADHD. My years of hard work paid off in that both of my sons went to College. It turned out that both are very knowledgeable in the sciences and particularly skilled in math/electronics/computer science. The one with ADHD prefers robotics and more solitary endeavors; whereas, the other, ADD, is very outgoing and headed for a Phd and the world of Academia. I believe that I have a great deal to offer others with similar issues.

Algebra 1

I studied math at the U of A and tutored it all through college. My students, then, were adults going back to school for a second career and/or getting a delayed degree. The biggest stumbling block for them was "anxiety" with the subject and/or tests coupled with a deficiency in basic math concepts. Often, there was a failure, on the part of instructors to present the lessons for more than one type of learner. In most cases, over the years, I have noticed that this still holds true with adults as well as children/teenagers. Math is my favorite subject and Algebra is at the top of that list. It is very gratifying to help students overcome their difficulties with math and become successful/competent in the subject.

Algebra 2

ASVAB

Having attended private schools growing up, my education has a very strong and diverse foundation. My strengths are math, language, and social studies. I have a background in computer science and studied math & Spanish at the Univ of Ark. For the past few years, I have been tutoring people for the GED and general study skills. I believe I can be quite effective in this case as well.

Business

I have 25 years' experience as owner &/or operator of small businesses. For the past 20 years, I have served in a leadership role for many different non-profit groups. Currently I am serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of a 501c3 (non-profit) organization that recycles electronics. In the year that I have been in this position, I have designed and implemented a complete record-keeping system and reached back to 2008 to bring their records up to date. Simultaneously, I have been working on a marketing strategy which will be ready to implement in a few months. Therefore; mine is a well-rounded foundation in business administration.

Elementary (K-6th)

In addition to studying at the University, I have been tutoring elementary students in math, reading, penmanship, study skills, and general education for the past 2 years. It all started when a friend's third grader was failing math. I offered to see if I could help because she was a single mother and could ill afford a tutor. My friend was very pleased with her daughter's improvement and told others. Before I knew it, I was tutoring a lot of elementary kids and the subjects began to multiply. I enjoy the kids, particularly when they trust and try the things I recommend.

Elementary Math

I studied math at the U of A and tutored it all through college. My students, then, were adults going back to school for a second career and/or getting a delayed degree. The biggest stumbling block for them was "anxiety" with the subject and/or tests coupled with a deficiency in basic math concepts. Often, there was a failure, on the part of instructors to present the lessons for more than one type of learner. In most cases, through the years, I have noticed that this still holds true with adults as well as children/teenagers. In the last few years I have tutored many children in math and have discovered a whole new area of fulfillment. It has become a personal challenge to inspire/instill a respect/love for math in these young people. I love Math. It is very gratifying to help students overcome their difficulties with math and become successful/competent in the subject.

Elementary Science

I took courses (with labs) in Geology, Botany, Chemistry, and Physics while attending college. Since starting to teach/tutor, I have done a great deal of science with the elementary children. It is interesting how much more in-depth their studies are compared to those I experienced as an elementary student.

English

Growing up, my mother insisted on perfect grammar being spoken at all times. Therefore, English was always very easy for me. In college, I had a very special grammar course which solidified my technical expertise in grammar. A second instructor in college was able to instill a love of literature that I had not previously had. I feel quite capable to tutor English students who are behind.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL for approximately 20 years and love it. It is easier to start with conversation and, once you have a grasp of that, learning to read and write the new language is much easier. Since I am bilingual, I understand the challenges of learning a language. English is my native language and I would love to help you learn it!

GED

GED is a fairly straight forward test. The most important skills needed for the exam are reading and math. Math is something anyone can learn and many are nervous about. I love math and love teaching it even more. If your reading skills are lacking, they can be brought up to par quickly with the techniques I use with all my students. If you are serious and willing to trust me, you can pass the GED. Please, contact me with any questions and/or to make arrangements for a meeting.

Geometry

I studied math at the U of A and tutored it all through college. My students, then, were adults going back to school for a second career and/or getting a delayed degree. The biggest stumbling block for them was "anxiety" with the subject and/or tests coupled with a deficiency in basic math concepts. Often, there was a failure, on the part of instructors to present the lessons for more than one type of learner. In most cases, over the years, I have noticed that this still holds true with adults as well as children/teenagers. Math is my favorite subject and Geometry is just plain fun. It is very gratifying to help students overcome their difficulties with math and become successful/competent in the subject.

Grammar

I teach many students English as a Second Language and, amazingly, continue to gain new insights into the structure of the English language. Growing up, my mother insisted on perfect grammar being spoken at all times. Therefore, English was always very easy for me. In college, I had a very special grammar course which solidified my technical expertise in grammar. I feel quite capable of tutoring English students who are behind.

Phonics

I learned to read with phonics. I teach English and Spanish reading and writing using a combination of phonics and sight. In college, I studied Linguistics and subsequently developed a gift and a passion for phonics.

Praxis

I studied math at the University of Arkansas. During my tenure at the U of A, I supplemented my income with a work-study job in the tutoring office as well as working with private individuals. I have tutored a wide variety of math courses over the course of 30 years. Finally, teaching and math are my passions.

Prealgebra

Precalculus

I studied math at the U of A and tutored it all through college. My students, then, were adults going back to school for a second career and/or getting a delayed degree. The biggest stumbling block for them was "anxiety" with the subject and/or tests coupled with a deficiency in basic math concepts. Often, there was a failure, on the part of instructors to present the lessons for more than one type of learner. In most cases, over the years, I have noticed that this still holds true with adults as well as children/teenagers. Math is my favorite subject. I, personally, struggled with Calculus in the beginning and overcame the difficulties to reach a point where the beauty of it was clear to me. I learned to love it and completed 3 semesters of the subject.

Precalculus provides the essential foundation for Calculus, one that I didn't have when I started to learn it. I take great satisfaction in providing this background for a student's future. The proper background helps students avoid difficulties in any area of life. My focus is math and providing students that which is necessary to become successful/competent in their subjects.

Proofreading

First of all, proofreading is an "art" not so much a science!Of course, you must have a broad vocabulary, excellent spelling skills, and the ability to focus and isolate ideas. Put all that together with your own "knack" (everyone has it to some degree) and proofreading is a snap! Let's see where you are in these areas of skill, how we can combine them with your "knack," and make a plan. Contact me with your questions, concerns, or to schedule a session.

Reading

I am a good speller with a good vocabulary. My mother insisted on perfect grammar being spoken at all times. Therefore, English was always very easy for me. In college, I had a very special grammar course which solidified my technical expertise in grammar. A second instructor in college was able to instill a love of literature that I had not previously had. Due to the fact that my family moved a lot when I was young, I was a slow reader until college when I gained some great study skills. So, I may have experienced what you are experiencing now. I would love to help you improve your reading skills. Contact me with questions, concerns, or to schedule a session.

SAT Math

I was a math major in college and loved every minute of it, even abstract algebra! When I sat for the SAT, many years ago, it was tough! It's still tough if you are not prepared! I'd like to help you prepare for the math section of your SAT. Contact me with your questions, concerns, or to schedule a session. I look forward to working with you.

SAT Reading

I have always been a student of the English language, and always will be. I am a good speller with a good vocabulary. Some of my favorite pass times are crossword puzzles and just about any word game. Growing up, my mother insisted on perfect grammar being spoken at all times. Therefore, English was always very easy for me. In college, I had a very special grammar course which solidified my technical expertise in grammar. A second instructor in college was able to instill a love of literature that I had not previously had. I would love to help you prepare for the Reading section of the SAT exam.

SAT Writing

I discovered the wonderful world of essays during my first semester in college! I've always loved to tell stories and fancy myself a great story teller! My grammar, spelling, and vocabulary are good, too! Combine these skills with a love for the English language and you have, in my opinion, the perfect recipe for teaching/learning good writing. I'd love to help you prepare for the writing section of the SAT. Please, feel free to contact me with concerns, questions, etc. I look forward to hearing from you!

Sewing

Sewing consists of hand stitching and machine stitching. Machine sewing includes sewing of seams, zippers, appliques, and monograms. There are various sewing machines available with a wide variety of capabilities, thus it is important to understand the basics of operating your sewing machine.

If you want to make clothing and other things from patterns available for purchase, then you must understand how to use patterns and adjust them to fit each individual item produced from one. How to lay out a pattern and cut it out so that you minimize the amount of fabric used is an art! There are many short cuts and "tricks" that are helpful to know.

Hand sewing is also quite varied in that there are different stitches. Some examples are "cross stitch", "embroidery", back stitch, whip stitch, and basting, blind, chain, etc. It is a long list. There are very important uses for each type of stitch.

Nowadays, sewing machines are so advanced, sophisticated, that much of the hand work can be done by them. However, there is no substitute for the real old-fashioned hand sewing done by a "seamstress"!

Spanish

I am known as Profesora. I am a native speaker of both English and Spanish. For twenty plus years, I have been teaching Spanish to all ages and thoroughly enjoying it. I grew up in South America where my father drilled oil wells. I studied Spanish throughout high school and college. My favorite situation is long term where I bring a student along from speaking very little, if any, to being conversational. I believe that there should be no reading/writing until a student can speak. This is because there are different skill sets required to learn them. Trying to learn all three at once causes all three to suffer. What usually happens is that the reading/writing skills develop fairly well and the student will barely attempt speaking. Unfortunately, our schools are set up to teach reading/writing because the books require reading and they must measure a student's mastery of the subject by testing on paper. I love Spanish and delight in teaching/tutoring others.

Spelling

OK, spelling is the most basic aspect of English! Everyone can't be the spelling bee champion but everyone can learn how to spell. With discipline, a good coach, and the desire to improve, you can learn to spell. I can teach you how to spell! You know, it is to reading & writing as adding & subtracting is to math. You can't do one without the other. Contact me with your questions, concerns, or to schedule a session.

Study Skills

When I went to college, I realized right away that my study skills were not sufficient for the next few years. The very first semester, I took a course in "Study Skills" which was magnificent! Everything I learned in that course was put to use during my tenure at the University of Arkansas.

Vocabulary

In my opinion, there is nothing more fun than word games! I rarely lose! A strong vocabulary is like money in the bank. The more you have, the easier it is to get your needs met! Strengthening/improving/expanding your vocabulary will enhance your academic success as well as enrich your life. I would love to help you with your vocabulary! Contact me for questions, comments, or to schedule a session.

Writing

I'm a great story teller and enjoy doing it! My grammar, spelling, and vocabulary are great! Combine these skills with a love for the English language and you have, in my opinion, the perfect recipe for teaching/learning good writing. Please, feel free to contact me with concerns, questions, etc. I look forward to hearing from you!

Very knowledgeable tutor. — Sherry doesn't just know Spanish; she has a very in depth understanding of it! This is a great help when trying to learn the language because instead of just memorizing a long list of words and phrases, it allows you to develop an understanding of why you are saying things in a certain way. I have learned from experience that just knowing a lot of Spanish words is not enough. There is also correct ...
