Hi! My students generally call me Mr. B. I have over 20 years experience as a teacher and administrator in public schools. During that time I have worked directly with students from K-12. I have also been a school improvement consultant for schools and school districts in Alabama, Missouri and Illinois.
When tutoring, I establish a non-threatening and positive relationship with my student, whether an elementary child or a young adult struggling with college. I have found that one of the most common barriers to learning in the classroom is that of students feeling intimidated and afraid to speak up when they don't understand. A positive and encouraging relationship with a teacher or tutor can overcome that obstacle.
It seems like common sense, but when a student doesn't understand something, repeating the same thing in the same way will not help the student to understand. Students are individuals and learning is an individual task. It is by tapping into a student's strengths that we overcome weaknesses.
