Hi! I'm Laura, a former public school teacher of fifteen years. My most recent jobs in public education included teaching third grade for two years, fifth grade the year before, and teaching science lab students in grades 4-6 for several years in South Carolina. Before that, I taught both fifth grade, and fourth grade in Duncan, South Carolina, in Spartanburg County Schools. Prior, I taught sixth grade Literature in Shelby County, Tennessee. Having a wide variety of experiences makes me an ideal elementary grades tutor.
I enjoy using my sense of humor and I believe learning can be fun. My special gift is being able to reach and teach others who need a non-traditional environment. I believe in comfort and movement and active participation. I am very kind, patient and intuitive. I will plan interesting and thoughtful lessons to help you reach your goal. Your job will be to grasp this learning and own it. Together we can move YOU towards your goal.
I look forward to the opportunity to work with you.
I have a Master's degree in Divergent Learning. This training helps one identify, reach, teach and encourage underachievers, gifted underachievers, and students who struggle for other reasons. Using multiple sensory avenues is key to reaching a divergent learner and unlocking learning potential.
I hold an elementary teaching certification in the state of Alabama.
I am a former elementary reading teacher that had daily experience in phonics instruction for fifteen years. This past school year I tutored a first grader, a second grader, and a third grader in reading and phonics skills. This summer I am successfully working with two children on these skills.
When I relocated to Alabama I had to retake the PRAXIS exam to receive an Alabama teaching license. I had taken the PRAXIS in Tennessee and held a license in both Tennessee and South Carolina. I approached the test in my most aggressive study mode and spent two months in intensive study. My study method is highly effective and I have taught it over the years to my public school students. When I received my PRAXIS scores I was informed that I had scored in the top fifteen percent of all test takers ever! I am proud of this accomplishment and I am confident that I can teach these skills to future teachers.
I am a former public education teacher with over fifteen years of experience. Additionally, I hold a Masters degree in teaching underachieving students. Over the years I have developed a method for study that is proven effective for learning new material and review for testing.
