Hello! I graduated in 2013 from Princeton with a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a certificate in Environmental Studies. Before Princeton, I attended Oak Mountain High School where I challenged myself with a rigorous AP schedule across many disciplines. I am now taking post-baccalaureate courses at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in order to meet medical school admission requirements.

In the meantime, I would love to help students on their paths to success. I know schools are becoming increasingly competitive places as the stakes for gaining admission into top colleges and receiving top scholarships are raised, and I believe being a tutor is a good way to support students and mitigate stress levels. I've been blessed with many opportunities to study the things I love, and I bring that passion to educational opportunities-- basic biology, genetics, ecology, environmental science, algebra and trigonometry-- I find it all exciting and value the opportunity to help others get excited about math and science, too.

I have experience as a nature instructor with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, where I received top marks in the areas of instruction and scholarship. Beyond math and science, I am also proficient in Spanish and am available for Spanish lessons as well as conversational practice. Please feel free to reach out through WyzAnt with any questions about my experiences!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I majored in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton. My coursework included organismal biology, evolution, community ecology, tropical vertebrate ecology, tropical biology, coral reef biology, cell biology, and animal behavior. I've taught biology as a nature instructor through the Friends of the National Zoo.

Genetics

I took BY 210 - Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and received an A in the course. I'm currently taking BY 437 - Epigenetics at UAB and doing quite well in it as well. Additionally, my major required a good understanding of genetic principles as the underlying mechanism of evolution and natural selection.

Organic Chemistry

I received As in both Organic Chemistry I & II at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as well as in the associated lab courses. I've also studied organic chemistry in the context of MCAT preparation, and am familiar with techniques and strategies useful on that exam. While taking the course, I frequently led informal study groups and review sessions for my peers.

Physics

I took Physics I on a pass/fail basis at Princeton, receiving a passing grade in the class. I subsequently took Physics I and II at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and received As in both courses. I frequently led informal study groups for my peers. I have also studied physics in preparation for the MCAT, and am familiar with useful techniques to approaching problems on that exam.

Zoology

I have a BA in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) from Princeton University. My undergraduate thesis focused on animal behavior, and my coursework included Tropical Vertebrate Ecology, Tropical Biology, Coral Reef Biology, Animal Behavior, Cellular Biology, and Organismal Biology. While there were no courses offered at Princeton that explicitly focused on zoology, the EEB program and its classes taught the fundamentals of zoology in a general sense.

Great Algebra Tutor — We have been very pleased with Rodrigo as a tutor for our daughter. He knows the material well, is very supportive, and is astute in recognizing our daughter's needs. Without doubt, our daughter has very much benefited from his instruction. He has provided written feedback on almost every lesson, which has been very reassuring to us in terms of our daughter's progress. ...
