I am a student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) majoring in Japanese Language and Culture. As a university student, I have spent a significant amount of time studying Japanese language and culture through an intensive language program at a notable language school in Tokyo, Japan. I have been working closely with the Japanese department at UAB in Japanese classes taught on campus and through distance-learning courses.
I have also worked closely with international students for the past two years in improving their understanding and fluency in the English language through conversation practice and study of syntax and grammar. I have worked as a volunteer for the Tuscaloosa Sister Cites Commission teaching English to high school exchange students from Japan.
Although I usually work with Japanese students in English as a second language, I am open to all who wish to improve their English abilities.
In tutoring non-native English speakers, I first start by determining the current English ability. This is done by reviewing written samples (this can usually be done by communications via email or some other written sample) followed by an in-person interview to determine the speaking ability (pronunciation, understanding of grammar, ability to understand spoken English) and discussing the personal goals in studying English.
I am very passionate about the study of language and would like to help all who wish to acquire a better command of English or who wish learn Japanese as a second language.
