First Tutoring Session

I recently completed my first tutoring session with WyzAnt. It went really well. We met for a couple of hours and focused on math and studying ideas for an upcoming test. The student did a great job and seemed to catch on really quickly.

It has been a while since he worked on the math that is covered in the test, but he did a great job keeping up and moving quickly through the review. I could tell he was slowly remembering the material.

During the session we discussed ideas to work through the reading and math concepts and how to break up the subjects to maximize the studying time and retain the information instead of forgetting it in a day or so. We also discussed ways he can test himself to record his improvement of retention and speed, since this is a timed test.

There is still work to do, but he is very focused on doing well on the test. I do not doubt he will succeed beyond his expectations.

Winding Down the Summer

I am finally winding down the summer this week, with most of my students having taken their final exams last week. Subjects I tutored during the second summer session:

Elementary Statistics
Biostatistics
Physics
General Chemistry
Physiology
Molecular Biology
Algebra 1
Algebra 2
English Literature
Precalculus

Best of luck to all of my students! You have all worked hard and I hope you all get the grades that you were hoping for. Looking forward to a busy fall semester!

Summer tutoring

I have been surprised at how many parents are very nervous about how their children will do in junior high math. It does go along, though, with what I have heard that most people's math skills are about at 5th grade level, so they are not really able to help their children much in math after that. I am happy to help fill that gap.

Pre Assessment

I had a student who submitted a request to get assistance with basic Algebra skills in preparation for an exam. She highlighted the skills she needed assistance with and had a set schedule that she wanted to adhere to for the tutoring. Being the person that I am, I still wanted her to take a skills assessment so that I would know where to begin and what concepts she had yet to learn.

For any new student or tutor, the pre-assessment is something that is needed! It is an integral part of learning. Since a tutor's time with any student is short, the best way to maximize the results is through a skills assessment. The assessment is not long and should only take, at most, 5-10 minutes. However, within that time the tutor is able to observe where mistakes are being made, comprise a lesson to help re-teach those skills, and possibly have time to teach higher order skills within that subject.

I will state that the pre-assessment helped me tremendously with my student. Not only were they struggling in the subject she had outlined, but she was also doing other processes incorrectly. By assessing we were able to correct all problems she was having in time for her exam.
