Meeting Students Where They Are

Each person seeks tutoring for a different reason. One person might be really good in math but they are not confident in their skills and another person might know the correct steps needed solve a physics problem but they don’t really understand what the answer means. As a tutor, it is important for me to meet the students where they are. I need to ask questions to understand their approach to a subject and where they are encountering difficulties. I need to ask questions to find out what they want to focus on. I need to ask questions to make sure they understand the topic in such as way that they can do it independently. Tutoring is different from teaching in that it is more student centered. The tutor acts as a facilitator and follows the students lead in order to have a successful session.
