100 Percent of My Students Passed Their NY State Mathematics, English Language, Art and Science Exams

For the 5th year in a row, all my students have passed their NY State examinations. A few have made it to the Honor Roll, and some are receiving Academic Achievement Awards next week. I am so proud of them. This was a difficult year for some, especially with Common Core test requirement, being a late suggestion and requirement by Bloomberg's team. So many students and parents were very worried and scared. So I did my research, and bought the required books, as well as to incorporate the use of the students' books.

Each session I worked on building their competency and comprehension skills,...

My new world in tutoring...

Hello fellow scholars!

This is my first blog for WyzAnt Tutoring services and I just applied to my first student request! This is so exciting. I love to learn and read about new places and moving to Milwaukee has been very interesting. Let me fill you in on who I am...I grew up in Delavan, Wisconsin. After I was married my husbands job moved us all over the southern parts of the U.S.A. Our own children went to school in six different states and I was licensed to teach in each of those states as well. Each new location gave me a chance to learn more local state history and explore new cities...

Advice to my younger self- the student

IF I could go back in time and give my younger self some advice on how to be a better student, be more successful in school, life, etc, I would definitely tell myself that being involved in everything comes at a cost. It is better to find a few things that you like to do, do them well and often, than feeling stressed because there is so much on your plate at one time. Being a 'Jack of all Trades' it is natural for me to dip my toes in different waters- all at the same time, but that does not mean that I can give 100% to any of them at that time.

While I was able to get good grades (A- average)...

Hello tutoring world!

Hello! Here I am constructing my first tutoring blog! I am eager and excited to tutor you and get your from good to great!

When tutoring, I work with my students to find out how they learn best and what other skills could be introduced to further help them. My experience as a 6th grade teacher has certainly helped me discover many new ways to reach every type of learner! Hope to talk to you soon about your tutoring needs!

My guidelines

Give positive feedback, use encouraging vocabulary

Find success, and reinforce effort, in even minor accomplishment

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A tutor provides expertise, experience, and encouragement.
They do not provide "answers," but rather assist in problem solving, in getting answers.
The challenge is to focus on assignments within the context they are assigned.

Tutors should not be expected to diagnose learning disabilities.
Diagnosis should take place outside of the tutoring process by a professional academic counselor...

Yesterday was a Great Day

What a way to start off the New Year! First I met with a student for US History and Living Environment. She is taking the Regents exams in three weeks. When I first met with her, Cee had a fear of taking exams, and was very nervous. She struggled with understanding both subjects; the Historical Events and dates, as well as the vocabulary words for Biology. Her next struggles were understanding and answering the document based questions for US History and the short responses for LE. Now she answers them much more confidently and accurately, and has even improved in writing her document...

Preparing for a Better Second Semester

Students sometimes feel like they’ve run a marathon when the first semester of school ends. Depending on individual circumstances, students may truly have put in more effort than usual this semester. Students who didn’t meet your (or their own) academic expectations may feel anxious about the end of winter/ Christmas break. This article lists four (4) things you can do as a parent (or that adult students can do themselves) to renew themselves and prepare to improve their second semester performance.

Four Tips for a Better Second Semester

Regardless of grade level, most students feel they can...

Is “Brain Drain” Real?

There is plenty of research about the “summer brain drain” – a reference to the amount of learning that children lose during their summer breaks. Some researchers believe students can lose as much as three months worth of last year’s learning over the summer. Several reasons are cited for this; one of them is the absence of regular reviews of material to reinforce what’s been learned. This article summarizes the “brain drain” phenomenon and how educators, parents, and families can help prevent this from happening.

Educational researchers have studied the “summer brain...

During this free time between the holidays, I will be available and ready to work around your busy Christmas and New Years schedules...

Molecular geometry, electron geometry, covalent bonds: N-A equals S equation

The equation below is used for Covalent Bonds, Molecular geometry, electron geometry, and structural formulas to figure the number of bonds in a molecule.

N-A = S equation to figure the number of bonds in a molecule

N = needed: the sum of the number of valence electrons needed by each atom (2 for hydrogen, 8 for all other atoms)

A = available: the sum of the number of valence electrons available for each atom

S = shared: the number of electrons shared in the molecule

S/2 = the number of covalent bonds in the molecule
