I was in middle school, utterly convinced of my own failure in mathematics, trying to understand the words coming out of Mrs. Beagle's squeaky mouth with its many wobbly chins. And I can say that she put the Fear of Math into me.

"The Fear of Math" is something many children experience. Yet, after switching schools for the last time, no longer under the auspices of Mrs. Beagle's beady stare, I sat down and taught myself Calculus. It wasn't easy, but after six months of nothing but math, I realized I was quite good at it after all.

As it turns out, being bad at something is often the first step to being sort of good at it. But most of all, what I learned from Mrs. Beagle lingers in my mind: it is possible overcome the context of your environment.
http://www.wyzant.com/Tutors/PA/Quakertown/8210665/Blog/9087/against_the_odds.aspxAgainst the Oddsposted by WyzAnt tutor: Simeon S.

I once had a student, Danny, who had dropped out of school in the 8th grade. He was so far behind the first time we studied together, it took us 3 hours to complete a single 25 minute math section from the SAT. Danny didn't even know how to add fractions.

My paradigm as a teacher is to make myself progressively unnecessary. So, when Danny and I began, I was there all the time. Until I wasn't, and Danny, the kid everyone thought of as failure, had scored over 2100 on the SAT.

It is possible to overcome the context of your environment.
